I have been asked a question about a phone used in US with Sprint. It is a sanyo and Sprint have told my friend that it does not have a SIM so cannot work with any other SP.

Is this something new just for the US (Hawaii) or just Sprints way to ensure they use roaming changes?

Thanks guys

Not new but old I would say. No sim means it does not use GSM like most of the world and uses the old TDMA system where the phone had no sim card. Both GSM and TDMA are both still used in North America but it seems to be moving to GSM.

So sounds to me like they are correct. Although I think there was one small company in Thailand that did have TDMA service but you would need a TDMA phone for their system unless you could get sprint to unlock yours and it also worked on the same frequency as Asia. Something I am not even sure is possible to be honest

if you use as TDMA phone in LOS, it's SID will get copied and cloned if you go anywhere near MBK or other big center that sells a lot of used phones

then you will have a nice bill from your provider when you get home

this may not be the case nowadays, since GSM and CDMA are the go here in LOS now

but I know in the old days, passing thru or even near MBK with a TDMA phone was a BAD idea

a lot of Thais I knew then switched to GSM just to be safer from clone theives

If you or your buddy uses Sprint or Verizon phones, you are out of luck when coming to LOS. Go to MBK and get yourself a nice GSM phone, a SIM card, and be done with it. Cheap phones can be had for as low as 1,500 Baht.

TMDA (and the data side, CDMA) have some advantages (mostly cheaper infrastructure and faster data rates, and easier to expand network), but by and large GSM wins in terms of flexibility.

Interesting tidbit about SID thievery in and around MBK. Yeah, the only thing happening nowadays is getting slammed by Bluetooth requests. When in LOS just keep your BT turned off.

Go to ebay, buy an old nokia for maybe US$10, buy sim card when arrive in BKK plus charger. ALL up maybe US$16 plus sim,, relax knowing you have a working phone for LOS for the next SEVERAL years

GSM is actually based on Both FDMA & TDMA Technologies so it is not correct to oppose GSM & TDMA. To be specific, Sprint is a CDMA provider and since the merger with Nextel an IDEN provider as well.

The phone you are mentioning is most likely a CDMA phone. Most CDMA phones are SIM-less but in Thailand Hutch/CAT does use SIM-based CDMA phones (It is called USIM then).

The answers above seems to be referring to the first generation analog phones with a mixed mashed of wrongly used technical terms.

SID or System Identification Code is a Network identification number (Base Station to be specific) so I am curious how anyone can use this info to charge somebody else account. Though to be honest I am not old enough to have experienced the analog time.

Ultimately the answer is that you wont be able to use this phone as it will not be able to attach to any network in here.

Oh and by the way, there is no cloning a handset/subscription whether it is SIM or SIM-less. The only privacy issue with analog is that the conversations are transmitted in clear so it is easy to listen to any body's conversation.

Recently found a SIMLess mobile in a taxi. Probably from Korea. Nice Samsung model. Nobody called; cannot do anything with it, too bad.
