actually a more interesting survey would surely be how many of those who waited in line actually did so for themselves, or just to sell on to someone else
i mean there ARE a lot of iphones on ebay, locked or unlocked etc, but where did these come from?
look at the tv coverage of the queues - its all slackers nerds and students who wanted to be the first so they can a) try and hack it first or b) try and sell it quickly to make a few hundred bucks
what % of those in the queue were buying for themselves or in fact still even have the phone??

particularly this bit, because americans have notoriously bad credit ratings and strict guidelines too
imagine waiting in a line for 5 hours for a $199 phone to be told you cant buy one because in 2006 you mum missed one mortgage repayment and you are still registered to vote at her address?
ok thats only an example but usa credit agencies are very fickle and strict
even allowing for that, you still have to bring and provide so much personal information with you to the store to buy the phone and activate it in store, as it says, this then delays everyone else

snpark you bring up a great point. This is where the USA missed the boat and are behind many 3rd world countries with their instance of locking people into contracts.
Look at Aisa with their handy SIM cards and 1-2-Call cards when you can purchase a phone and be talking to someone in 2 minutes.
Where is the USA government in all of this who are supposed to be regulating the phone systems? It is really a case of the haves and have not's
Big brother is watching as it takes so much info just to nuy and get a phone on line. So much for the saying "Let Freedom Ring" in the case of Ma Bell Freedom rings for only those with a SSN, good credit,..etc.

well, maybe Apple isn't doing so bad with iPhone, as some merchants of doom here would like us to believe. It's news today that Micro$oft is keen to provide a "Apple-like" experience when working with hardware vendors in future. Here an extract of an email from Ballmer sent out to M$ employees, that is now circulating online:
"Apple: In the competition between PCs and Macs, we outsell Apple 30-to-1. But there is no doubt that Apple is thriving. Why? Because they are good at providing an experience that is narrow but complete, while our commitment to choice often comes with some compromises to the end-to-end experience. Today, we’re changing the way we work with hardware vendors to ensure that we can provide complete experiences with absolutely no compromises. We’ll do the same with phones—providing choice as we work to create great end-to-end experiences."
a bit of a turnaround since Ballmer aired his thoughts on TV of the then impending iPhone. Ballmer laughing at the iPhone
