WOW, just had a shocker, I'm trying to buy a new camcorder and after spending some time reading reviews on the internet decided on the Sony DCR-SR200, which Amazon has up for $649.99, okay, I don't expect the Amazon price in Bangers but somewhere not too far off, how wrong, Its priced at 45,140 Baht in here !?!
I was also looking at the DVD burner Song VRD-MC3 a snip at $150, but don't be silly, it's 7,990 Baht here.

Anyone any ideas, at those prices I might be worth flying to HK or Singapore to get them, what would the bro's suggest ?

The model they sell here in Thailand is the 200E which is a better model than the 200 advertised on Amazon.

The 200E goes at the cheapest for US829+ on Ebay.

'Made in Hongkong' Bangkok sells the 200E for 39,900 baht.

US$ 829 x 33 baht = THB 27.357.. still another 12,000 baht difference, but in Hong Kong you always have to wonder if you get the real Sony and if the guarantee and repair service is worldwide....

Careful Meaty the DCR-SR200 is NSTC while the DCR-SR200E is PAL so be sure of which format you need/want.

If indeed you are looking for the 200E the following sites have it for around $700 USD:
Preferredphoto.com
Cameraaddict.com
Prestigecamera.com

Furthermore, Amazon lists the 200 as a 2.1MP and the 200E as a 4MP.

The sites as mentioned above list them both as 4MP.

Thanks guys, appreciate it. In terms of NTSC or PAL, am I right in saying PAL is just used in the US ?
I live in Bangers and will for many many more years, and i'm not from the US anyway, which would be most suited ?
Also, if I ordered from any of the sites you mention, for delivery in Bangkok, what are the real chances of receiving the package, and what import tax implications will I be burdened with ? I'd hate to fork over the dough, only to find customs held it for a stupid amount of 'fine' to release it, or it went 'missing' !!
Thanks again.

Actually Thailand is PAL, and the US is NTSC.

As for ordering from one of the sites, since you have lived in Bangers for a while you know it can be a crapshoot when it comes to packages and customs. I have had several packages from Victoria Secrets never make it to me (apparently there is some lady working in the Thai customs office that really likes VS). The only semi-effective method that I have found to avoid much of the tax is by ordering things and having it sent to a friend or relative in my home country, and then having them send it to me in Thailand. Typically I wait and have serval things sent a the same time. For some reason I have had much more success in paying little or no tax on personal packages sent to me (as gifts) in Thailand as apposed to packages sent to me by a company.

But this is not a small value item so if it does get caught up in customs I would say the chances are pretty good that they will try to extract a pretty big payment – negating any possible savings. And it is probably not worth the time/money to make a trip to Sing or HK for just the one or two items. If you were going to travel to one or the other location for other reasons or if you know someone that will be traveling to one of the locations then it might be an option.

Sorry to say the best option might just be to bite the bullet and pay extra for it here in BKK.

No, the general system in the US is NTSC. The ruling system in Thailand (and most parts of Europe) is PAL.
That's why they sell only the 200E in Thailand.

If the TV (s) you're using it on is multi system (NTSC as well as PAL) there's no problem. Else wise, you have to limit your choice to the system of your TV.

However, if you make movies for the web or to play on your computer either system will do.

It's almost certain that the customs will add VAT (7%) and import duties on it. Don't know how much in total, but I guess between 20-25%.

Also, you might to make sure that these sellers export outside the USA and if so, can they do do it by Fedex (and at what cost).

And then, again, when it's broken... is the warranty valid here?
