I recently purchased a Dell computer, it came with licensed Windows XP and Office 2007. It was shipped to me on the 23rd of June. On the 9th of July Microsoft SQL Server 2005 was installed onto my machine (i have the event logs).
The thing is, the version is not licensed, I did not install it and nobody else has access to my machine, how on earth can this program have been installed and for what purpose ? I don't even know what it would be used for !
I take it Microsoft would not push any unlicensed software onto me in a update ?
Any ideas ?
The machine is secure, it is connected to a LAN but that is firewall protected, only I have admin privelages on the machine, nobody else ever uses my machine.
I'm dumbfounded how this can happen. The reason its a big deal is it could have cost my employer an USD 18,000 fine from the piracy police if they had found it first !
I've contacted Dell and they have no idea, they just reminded me that the machine came preinstalled and was shipped before this program was installed so it has happened since I received it.
Spooky, any ideas ?
(and it's not a fast one by my boss, definetly not)

Check if your machine has been compromised - easy to do on XP. There's a variety of malwares that will turn your machine into obedient bots, participating larger bot nets -- the major component of some of the botnets is a pirated version of MS SQL Server, that the rootkits use to do their evil.

You'd be amazed how many people think their machines are 'secure', yet are acting as happy little bots because of one small security compromise - this could have happened at any time, even at the dealer, the factory, or when you first configured the machine, and were connected to the public internet.

The mysterious presence of MS SQL 2005 does seem to support that hypothesis.

I remember that when Microsoft released their free versions of Visual Basic (C#,C++ etc) a free version of MS SQL 2005 Desktop version was provided too.

Running NOD 32 Anti-virus (licensed), done a full scan and found nothing untoward on my machine.

I'm going to unistall the SQL program, I wonder if it will magically reappear !?!

In a world where Windoze worms are now even colonizing orbiting space stations you really need to keep up your defenses.

Perhaps this BIOS updatewas destined for your motherboard.

Thankfull yet again that I run OS X and needn't worry about mischievous M$ malware....

Did you install any other software around that same time that might have installed a version of SQL Server database?

You might want to check and see what databases are installed on the machine, other then the default one.

Among other things, it's used by Business Contact Manager, which is part of Outlook 2007. Maybe that's your source?
