I got a sim card since a few years in my Thai phone, it has no expiration date

But now it seem ALL the sim cards for sale have an expiration date?? So my wife has to change number at each trip? VERY annoying...

Any suggestion?

There is an AIS SIM card that has a one year expiration period. Every time you top up (even 50 baht), it extends for one year. There is a restriction that every three months, there must be an incoming call, an outgoing call or a top up. But here is what you do, you register the card for roaming so it works in Europe, then every 3 months, you top up with 50 baht. You can do this from Europe. This will keep the SIM from getting canceled.

They've discontinued this card, but there are still some left. Here is the one place in Bangkok you should be able to get this SIM card (50 baht last month) :

CONNEX shop
MBK - 4th floor
Area B-17

The owner of the shop is a guy who looks about 40ish or so, speaks good English and can tell you about the rules of this card. There may be other similar SIMs available, he can tell you about them. make sure to speak to him, he is more knowledgeable than the girls who work there.

I also have a DTAC/Happy Sim that lasts for one year, when you top up it renews for a year. There is no restriction on the 90 day top up as listed above. The only down side is the per minute rate and SMS rate is a bit higher than normal, to be honest, I can't remember what the plan or anything is, but I looked it up on the DTAC/Happy Site.

With 1-2-Call, the expiry date gets extended by one month for every 300 B top up. So, you want it valid for another 6 months just top up 1,800 B. Previously, I was able to get one year for every 1,500 B top-up, but it doesn't work anymore, I only got the nominal 5 months.

I used to go through so much balance on the SIM card (calling USA using 009-1-xxx-xxxx uses 5 baht/min) that I always had a year expiry. Now that I use the CatPhoneNet calling card, I'm only paying 1-2 baht per minute to call USA and UK, with no money subtracted from the SIM card balance. Not much difference for a few calls but when you spend many hours a week calling for business, it really adds up.

madfrog,

I believe that the DTAC SIM plan that nohomesteaders is referring to is the SIMPLE plan. A bit more expensive than other plans, but every time you topup, the expiration date becomes 1 year from that date.

And, DTAC has a web site where you can top up from anywhere in the world. Just buy your topup cards in Thailand and bring them back to farangland. And, you have to register on the web site from Thailand, as they send you an SMS to confirm. Once you register, you can use the web site from anywhere in the world. That's what I do.

The first three months on DTAC SIMPLE you get a rate of 1 baht per minute. After these three months you can build up bonus.

1 Year is given immediately after the first topup.

You can pick one up at any 7/11 or Family Mart after you land for a couple of hundred baht.
