learning more languages is relative really and the older you get the more difficult it becomes. I speak 2 languages fluent plus bits of others including thai.
In los im only a tourist but each trip I learn few more words, but the only real way to learn is to live in a country.
My thai wife has lived here with me in europe for 10 yrs, and has never bothered to learn the langauge, quite the opposite she thinks the whole world should speak ringlish like she does, so thats what she does
Our son is half thai but she has never taught him her mother tongue. When she meets thai friends they all yak at him in thai but he cannot understand them.
One of the things I enjoy in travel is at least being able to order a beer in the native tongue. We are not all the same however and something thats compulsary is no fun.
So some will get by with english which apart from the boring situations with the family and other difficultys is quite easy to do theres a little thing called green back that does the talking for you. 
Anyway I think the receptionist is great 2 hr special pliz is all I need and in the room im not paying money to chat lol.

Just back from a mindblowing session with Khun Tuk.

I gather you must have some difficulty reading. My comment clearly referred to the semi-literate western bar trash that washes up in Thailand and despoils an otherwise pleasant enough country and culture. Come to think of it, I guess you have underscored that point rather effectively.

Honestly, I can't understand these folks that jump all over any perceived 'threat' to the reputation of Thailand. Even though this poster was completely misinterpreting what OldAsiaHand posted, the pattern of people going crazy whenever Thailand is criticized is pretty pathetic.
Generalizations are necessary whenever one has to have a conversation. Otherwise, no common ground can ever be reached. I doubt OAH is claiming that every single foreigner that comes to Thailand is a slobbering lout with no regard for decency (at least, I hope he's not claiming that!). However, he expressed his views about the, oftentimes, deplorable behavior of some folks that touch down in LOS.
These are necessary conversations and they are the point of a forum like this...

For what it is worth (absolutely nothing) I guess I am misunderstanding many comments but who the f*** cares what or who decides to come to LOS? There are plenty of less than gracious visitors to the South of Spain, South of England, South Africa, South of USA and South America. I suppose one could question visitors to the South of Saudi.

Recently I went to Tulip after reading the various posts. Thanks to everyone for the detailed info available on this forum.
