I just did the Visa run from Pattaya to Koh Kong... Left Pattaya at 7 a.m. Got to Koh Kong about 1 p.m. Cost 400B to Prat, then 100B to Had Lek (Cambodian Border), all by mini bus. But this was one way. So double of just a little less for R/T. Have not travelled to Poi Pet from Pattaya, but if it is a straight shot, without having to change minibuses, I thing that would be a good alternative. I think the R/T Visa run from BKK is 2000B.

I have done Poi Pet (Aranyaprathet) from Pattaya several times. I drive, leave around 0600 and am usually back home around 1400-1500. Do not try it on Fri/Sat/Sun. I believe the border closes at 1700.

Any updates on this topic, chaps? I have to do a visa run soon and I'd like to know the best way to do it. I will take a bus from Ekkamai to Pattaya no problem but then what do I do? Appreciate your help.

There is also an express bus from BKK to Aranya Prathet/Poi Pet that leaves out of Ekkamai. A friend took it the other way (AP to BKK) last year, just a couple of hundred baht, one way. Assume you could do something similar out of Pattaya. RTB's suggestion looks good, because you won't have to transit from the bus station in AP to the border at Poi Pet (not far, but an inconvenience). - Balls

Thanks very much for your tip, RTB. The driver sounds much better than taking the bus. Does the price you quoted include the Thai departure tax?

----begin quote------------------------------------------------- couple of months ago,I took a private car with driver to poi phet. roundtrip 1'800.00 Cambodia visa 500.00 Guide 100.00 Tips 160.00 go to sukhumvit soi 11. walk up to the ambassador. go left towards president park. first is a popular outside foodstall, right after is a taxi service with many cars. ask for mickey, he speaks good english and is a reliable, fast driver. you leave at 9 am, you are back before 5 pm. ----end quote------------------------------------------------- Let's give this puppy an update. After spending an hour or two (over two days) trying to locate this place, I finally did. 1. Take a left at *Park Hotel*. Big green sign, right across the street from the ambassador. President Park is on the right, just up the street from the Ambassador, but most certainly not the right landmark. (left is not an option anywhere near there) 2. Using a "popular foodstall" as a landmark is like saying "turn left at the hooker" on soi cowboy. More than a foodstalll, this is a big covered area with many tables. I suppose that would be an indication of its popularity, but being the dumbass that I am, I didn't see it immediately. 3. The Taxi Service is a bunch of guys laying around under an umbrella with a sign that says "Pattaya." This is located in front of a gated parking lot. Nothing says Taxi on it, but if one wakes up, they might say as much to you. 4. Mickey (Mikgey?) does not work there anymore, but one of the drivers was able to call him up and let me speak to him. Mickey asked if I knew the price, and I said I did, but wanted to confirm. He quoted me 1800 *each way*, and did not want to negotiate. It seems he's doubled his rate from the above quoted price - possibly from so many referrals from here. Cheers!

With the cost of airfare from BKK to Johor B. advertised at Baht 1,998 RT starting in Feb. with AirAsia, this may be a more comfortable alternative to those who now endure long hours in buses and trains.

OK. So I did the Poi Pet thing yesterday. There does not appear to be any such express bus to Aranya Prathet from Ekkamai - no buses there said Aranya Prathet, although one attendant tried to convince me that another city was the same thing. No thanks. Back up to Mo Chit BTS, get gouged by the motorcycle taxi to Northern bus terminal (pointing at a sheet of paper covered with thai and prices does wonders in deflating my desire to negotiate - god knows if it actually said 'bus' next to 30 baht. ) 180 bht for 1st-class aircon, each way. About 5.5 hours each way, not including the clusterf*ck traffic on return. I sat in that damn bus for 45 minutes while it moved a total of 30 feet. Of course, god knows where we were. But when thai people started getting out ansd walking, so did I. (An aside - I was about ready to stab the bus drivers if they said "mai pen rai" one more f*cking time (for the unclear, no I would not do that) ) The border was obnoxious. Not being used to graft, I was pleased that a nice turkish man had been on the bus for a visa run as well. He took me along with him, and I paid what he did. (of course, in theory, he could have been another con-artist, but I think he was legitimately helpful) 50 bht tuktuk to/from the bus station Looked like 120 baht for the 'tour guide' (100, but then they wanted some for me being along too) Let's clarify for the uninitiate: This is not so much for the tour, as it is to keep the guides from complaining to their friends the police. Pay for the 'guide.' 1000 bht bribe to the police, per person - otherwise, delays would occur - he pointed out some farang that had not paid, and were waiting around a long time. 300 bht visa fee They asked for this amount outright (1300 bht), so that was relatively easy. 100 baht fee for not bringing a spare passport photo Small change for the beggar children. Jee-sus that kid was persistent. Of course, there was some walking around, while they pretended that they were resolving issues for us - and oh by the way, do you want to do some shopping, maybe get laid? I didn't gamble. That place scared the bejesus out of me. No thai visa, no cambodian visa, not in any particular country, and a whole lot of people with guns that wanted money. Who would gamble there? Maybe if I was buddy buddy with the guards. But somehow I doubt I would be able to keep much in the way of winnings. (Note: the casino, as many of you know, is neither in cambodia or thailand - gambling is illegal in both countries) Cheers!
