Jojje
I have finally decided: I will not live the rest of my life in a cold snowy country with a socialist government. I have had it. After 25+ years of travelling to LOS it is time to make a major change. Thailand is under my skin and I realise finally that it is my destiny. I will boost my company even more for a while - then put up a "For Sale" sign and get the hell out of here! But I will not do it without prior careful planning and research.

I know there are many obstacles that need to be observed. But since there are other fortunate ex-pats already living there for many years, it canīt be impossible?! Having said that I of course realise that it is one big difference of flying in for a month vs actually making your final move and settling down in a new country. But this has been growing in me for so many years and it does not go away. I realise I need to do it.

My question is: does anyone know of some good lawfirm that could be used to set everything up? I mean that there are many concerns to be observed such as residence permit, work permit, possibilty to purchase property or run a company etc. Trying to sort all this out by oneself might be a steep hill. Better to use an expert. But do they exist? Very greatful for any input!

I will have moved to LOS within 2 years if everything works out.

Mr Dave
Yes, I can recommend a superb law firm in Bangkok which specializes in expat matters: visas, work permits, condo purchase and rental, company set up, etc.

Small law office - one main lawyer, one assistant - so I got lots of personal attention. So did a friend of mine who also uses this same lawyer.

When I decided to get a retirement visa here, this lawyer handled everything quickly and efficiently. First they took me to a nearby doctor for the medical certificate. Total time about 10 minutes. Cost 40 baht only. Then they drove me over to the bank. Introduced me to the branch manager - smiles all around. Very soon I walked out with a new bank book and an ATM card. It was effortless.

A few days later, the lawyer drove me to the immigration office. I saw many other farang men, sitting and waiting. Easy to tell they had been sitting a long time. I hardly waited at all. The assistant lawyer walked me from department to department - getting the necessary stamps as we went. I had a few minutes wait in each place, but only a few minutes. In about an hour I was walking out with a fresh retirement visa - good for one year. It was easy and effortless.

The lawyer's fee for complete visa service was 8,000 baht. The lawyer's fee for bank account opening was 3,000 baht. Both of those fees include "tea money" paid along the way. I did not ask for details. If you already have a bank account in Thailand, or prefer to open an account yourself, you can save that 3,000 baht fee.

The lawyer lived for some years in an English-speaking country, so he speaks very good English.

I recommend this lawyer to handle matters in Thailand. If you want to make contact, send a private message to me with your regular email address - I will reply by email.

Yes, you can easily save that money. I know there is another thread in the BTF about the same subject (opening a bank account), here:
http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=18&topic=228

No big deal to open a bank account in Thailand. I opened mine at a Bangkok Bank agency in less than 15 minutes.

They needed only my passport, I filled a form, asked for an ATM card that allows me to withdraw at least 100,000 baht/day (cost of this card: 250 baht for a 2-years duration) and that's all, folks!

By the way, I know a good lawyer in Udon Thani who speaks english, but I've only asked his help for suing a Thai entrepreneur and we won...

Don't know if he is efficient for other matters, but if you want his phone number, send me a PM.

What do u think it entailed huh take a wild guess bozo u really want to know => UTf***ingSE. What will be ur next off topic UTFSE question huh 'how much did u pay the doctor 40 or 150 baht? Curious for ur next off topic outright moron observation or wise crack remark on the subject "expert advise on moving to LOS". My pleasure to kick an assholeking

@Jojje it MIGHT take up to two years be4 u cum to LOS. Meanwhile a lot of rules could change.
Better make sure u get up to date legal advise shortly before actually making the move. Anyway unless u're a TH national they can allways kick u out and permanent residence is not for grabs : about a hundred each year ! For temporary residence it pretty much boils down u get more time one visa the more cash u put in their economy with a little mitigation in case u marry one of them TG. So i'm pretty sure u understand it's not all technical law questions. First what are u up to what are ur options : age 50+ or not, work yes no in case needed, self-employed or not, prepared to tie up capital in LOS or not, amount min max, marriage TG or not, intend to buy or rent, condo or house, mind border run travels or not. The answers to those questions will determine which 'legal status' u can obtain.

@mrdave care to share with us what ur legal status is? U say outright that T-money was included in the fee. Could u elaborate on that ? Was that merely to speed up the process or do u think u obtained a visa above ur actual legal status based on the merits of ur case ?

Issanking:

In spite of our friend Gievali's reluctance to discuss rationally...the doctor's examination usually consists of a blood pressure check and a visual exam.

In other words, if they find some blood pressure and they cannot see through you, the doctor will issue the certificate.
