Okay, so I have a TGF and I want to learn thai. Maybe I want to move here, I don't know. Where is the best place to go for a crash course that will move me along a little faster than my self study?

Gents,
Back in OZ after a sensational tour. I think now after 11, its's about time I got a better grasp on the language. My vocabulary is limited, and somewhat useless, except to amuse the TBGs.
I want to do maybe a 3 mth night course of around 3 hrs attendance p.w. + practice; here in Sydney, say at one of the community colleges, so it gave me an idea to develop a thread on members experience of learning Thai in their home cities, since It has been so hard to locate a suitable course here in Sydney.
So, have any of you gents found a good course in your home cities around the world?
Please share your info.
Cheers,
Liam

All well and good, but what do those words or phrases mean. How about putting the English translation next to it for our benefit.

Get a Thai gf and move in with her family... or have her family move in with you.

There's your crash course in Thai.

Sirtitus,
Sounds like a crash course in bankrupty to me! LOL.
My whole intention is to actually know what is going on around me in LOS, not feed myself to the sharks, despite this approach being an obviously effective learning process.
Cheers,
Liam

Phom yaak rian phasaa Thai (I want to learn - to speak the - Thai language)

I started with the Rosetta Stone and found it useless for a beginner...I then found a web site http://www.learningthai.com/speak_thai.html which I still use the sound files from - played on a CD in the car driving to work - as a kind of revision. The phrases are practical and help you to gain confidence to go on learning.

I also attended an Adult Education Thai language short course (Thai Level 1 at TAFE - Perth West Oz) and then hired a friend of the instructor to run through Thai phrases with me for two hours once a week.

I have a book shelf full of Thai language books but have found that only the one's written by speakers of true English (aka Australians) are of much use as accents enter into all forms of Thai-English transliteration (see half the arguments in the language section on this forum for examples).

The so-called benefits of learning from a native speaker are highly over-rated in my opinion - best thing would be to find a countryman who has learnt the language from the same starting point as yourself and who has the ability to actually teach others. Having a Thai partner has lots of benefits but IMHO language tuition is not often one of them. Enjoy.
