My question is if an international driving license is enough to drive in Thailand, or if you need a thai license, to fully comply with the law.

I do not mean a rented car.

I'm sure many of you living here know how that works.
I don't have an int. license, I just wanted to ask here before I start doing anything.
I checked out thaivisa.com but there is no real answer to that.

I would really appreciate if you could help me on this one.

oiram,

Have driven in Thailand on an international license before, but that was a rental car. There has been some talk on this subject before in some other threads, quite a while back, but if you use the search engine, you may find them.

Good luck!

Rented a car a while ago with only a Calif drivers license and my passport.  Don't know about driving a non-rental car.

Technically you need a international licence if you are on holiday. An IL only lasts 12 months, so if living here, you would have to get a thai one anyway, I have been told it is a piece of piss to get.
I have no licence here or international, but have driven and riden on several occasions. I was stopped in Chiang Mai on a bike recently and the police man asked to see my inetrnational drivers licence, I told him that the rental company kept it for deposit, no problem, asked for my passport and showed him a copy and all was ok.

I am currently in the process of obtaining a Thai Driver's license, once done I will post the 'experience" So far required:
> Copy of Passport with long-term VISA 1 year
> Copy of Work Permit
> Two Photos
> Copy of USA CA Drivers License

Still to get:
> Thai Translation of USA CA Drivers Licesne, must be done by Thai DMV ????
> Letter from Thai INS proving residence address
> Medical Certificate from hospital proving not insane. (I like this requirement only for farangs because all the Thai's are insane drivers)

Currently I have an expired International License and drive only outside of BKK since I want to save my money for better things.

I am told that Thai insurance will not pay for accidents that you are invovle in without a Thai driver's license. Rather than confirming this, I am just going thru the process. More to follow.....

Thanks very much!
Very helpful posts,
will have to check things out since I have no workpermit nor a long term visa, spend about 5-6 months a year in Thailand.
It's important to me (I guess to others also) that things are according to the law in Thailand, I know you could get around it, but I'd rather not.
Thanks again and keep on posting your experiences please!!

I talked to a lot of people on this subject. Some have only international licenses, some only homeland country licenses, some NO licenses. Some have been in accidents. The post outcomes were:

If you know Thai BS and pay a cheaper price to the officer.

If you do not know Thai, play dumb and pay off the officer.

Legally, I think the Thai government wants a reason to issue a foreigner a license. Staying here a year with a valid work permit satisfies this request.

Oiram in your case, I would get an International License each time you come. Not very much in money or hassle, then just check the insurance requirements for payout in case of accident.

These are the only docts i submitted in obtaining a Thai drivers licence 10 yrs. ago - not sure if already
amended.
1. Passport with valid Non-immigrant Visa.
2. Present residence address certified by embassy
3. Medical certificate stating good health
4. 2 photographs.

It takes one day processing only at the transpo
dept (opposite Sukhimvit 62). In my case i brought
along my original licence from my country (not international licence) and was excluded in the classroom/driving tests.

Got involved w/ traffic violations/accidents from
then on but no problem w/ police and insurance
(just handed them my licence for reference). It
is advisable to get first class insurance for the car
- worry free even if its my fault (about 20K per year)

All you need is money in your pocket!

I have been here for three years and never had a license. Three accidents, and numerous traffic violations (allegedly), usually 100 or 200 baht gets you on your way.
