In three days from now I will be in Thailand.
The past weeks have been tough. In a nice way.Real estate brooker visited and declared my house saleable. The painter/wallpaper and the cleaning up guy will do some coop thing while I am in LOS. Apparently my cleaning abilities are below par... Oh well.
So the plan to move to Thailand beg of next year is very much alive.
But there are some issues. Visa ones for example. Turning 50 seems to be thumbs up. Fine. Should be able to pull that one of.
What to keep and bring with me of all the stuff I have gathered through out the years is another. I so much would like to keep some paintings, books, "art objects", etc. This is a tricky one. Once you throw something away/leave behind it is gone. Simple as that.
Certain parts of my company is in a state of panic about me leaving and management is searching for escape goats to hang when things turn sour. I dont really care. Even though I do. Have mixed feelings about this. Obviously.
Whenever, and whatever the outcome, this issue is solved, drinks are on me. One round, OK? It will be champagne or water...

I hope you have changed your plan to stay at "House by the Pond". Nice name, but terrible location - not near anything: no shops, no restaurants, no girls: nothing! You'll need a taxi just to get to breakfast.

If you have the time go to your bank and get a new ATM card and have them make it a debit card only. If you have a credit card side thief can drain your account without a pin #.
Maintain your stateside health insurance for a year till Thai Blue Cross kicks in.
US citizens have "special rules" on opening a business, owning land,etc. These are good rules for us. Check Treaty of Amity, US Gov.
Last but not least. Try and not have a BG MOVE IN WITH YOU for at least a year.

To further comment on what BigD said, just remember that the Treaty of Amity expires at the end of this year. Further registrations under this treaty will be denied starting in 2005. So, if you do want to open up a company under this treaty, do it posthaste.

Good luck to ignaramus who, by my reckoning, should be arriving tomorrow.
I empathise with a lot of what he's going through. I've got three weeks left on the clock in Australia and then I start my new life in Bkk with four weeks holiday and then the new job.
I'm treating each day left here as a little project, ticking things off day by day. Multi-entry non-immigrant B visa? Tick. New ATM and credit cards? Tick. Sold my car? Tick?
As for what to bring and what not to bring...... i'm being harsh on this. All my furniture, paintings and my 3000 books are being shipped back to my house in Auckland. I figure I can get them sent to LOS when / if I ever need them. I'm turning up with no more than a handful of CDs, my golf clubs and two suitcases of clothes. It really is a new dawn. There's nothing I want that I can't buy in Bangkok when I'm there.
I'm keeping my money in the usual unit trusts here and in New Zealand. I've got a wad tucked away in an online account bearing 5.4% interest, just in case I decide to go mad and want to buy a condo - I can get to it immediately.
And I'm relocating the equivalent of 500k baht into my regular Aussie based chequing account to tide me over until I get my work permit, open a bank account and get settled.
It's hard to describe the anticipation I feel. I've just turned 40. Deciding to move to Bangkok and engineering a job there is a coup. The sense of relief I feel now that it's close is incredible. Dont get me wrong..... I know there will be frustrations and annoyances, but for the first time in ages it feels like I'm living the life I want to lead - warts and all - and not feeling I have to live the life others expect of me.

Scobie, sounds like you and I have similar experiences, except I shipped everything I owned in a couple of containers.
Currently, I am paying penance for my past indulgences by having to work in my mother country for 3 weeks.
MN thinks I have blue balls, but it is opposite, my balls have retracted so far inside my body after a couple of days of seeing what is available in "beauties" back in the USA that it is going to take a massive recovery back in Thailand to bring the shocked babies back out.
The fad of super sizing everything has made its way over to most of the women here and every once in a while I have to review all of the naked pics of TG's on my laptop to prevent me from going into a coma from overexposure to blubber butts, double chins and rubbing thighs.
Even worse is seeing men most who are better looking than myself cowtailing to these "beauties" Disgusting
Then lastly there is always the questions
"How can you take living away from the USA?"
"Aren't you bored over there?
"What do you do for fun?"
How do I answer these questions:
"Tell that them every so often I have to stop having sex for a while because I go so many BJ's that my skin has worn raw"

No I have give them some BS answer, because as late Jim Morrison stated "The men don't know, but the little girls understand"
Sex in the USA usually happens five times a year for these guys, birthdays, VD, anniversey, and XMAS. So most just sit their asses on the couch all weekend drink to numb their feelings and desires and live out their sad existence by watching over paid monkeys playing sports.
MN in case you are wondering about that career decision I had to make, guess what. Next time, I mention anything like that just slap me silly.  Not enough money in the free world. Decision made.
Scobie the only regret I have is not making the move sooner, but I am making up for LOS time.

What can I say ? You guys are two lucky fellas with a great amount of determination. You sure are an inspiration.
As they say : "If you want something - badly enough - you will get it".
Guys, wish you the best to both of you and hope you have a great time in LOS.
Hopefully, during one of my visits to BKK, I can get together with you for a drink or two and maybe learn something which will give me the strength to make a similar move sometime in the future.

Thanks newkid. Yes, there's certainly a huge amount of luck involved. I had to be in the right place at the right time to make it happen. But I'd say there is an equal amount of determination.
I was prepared to resign and go to Bkk for a six month R&R period and see how things panned out. My bosses didnt want me to leave, so together we worked out a solution that meets both our needs.
Am looking forward to it in a way I can hardly describe. One of the highlights will be meeting the guys from the board who - in one way or another - have fed my insatiable need for Bkk information over the last six months. I'll certainly be buying a few 'pay-back' beers at the October RT.
