Poppy, I would seek professional advice...as Chuck says it's complicated and best not to get your advice from a forum of non tax consultants. thaivisa.com is a better forum to start.

I read somewhere that if you have a work permit for Thailand you can get 1 vehicle in duty free? Not sure where I seen this, or if it is still valid? I know you can ship your household belongings in duty free with a work permit. Your Friend, GreenSlime

It's definitely doable if you can afford it. As for being on the expressway while on the left side of the car, don't worry about it as you can just hand the tollway fare to Tata, n'Natt, or whoever and they'll hand it over to the fare collector. Or you can just have a custom made wicker basket on a stick for such occasions.

if your car is new - or a classic, the streets of bkk are the last place I would choose to drive it in. my bmw is just 6 months old and already has 3 shopping cart dings. even if you park at the far end of the parking lots, the assholes still get you. i was amazed the first time I rode in a bkk cab that sideswiped another car. the respective drivers just screamed, flipped each other off and went their own way. my car would not make it from soi 3 to asoke without a major facelift. stick to the btf & the subway! moke

Strange post mokewen, drove in LOS for 7 years and never got such experience. Anyway, bringing a car from abroad sounds to be weird unless it's coming from Japan or UK maybe for the driving side. Or maybe your car is so valuable for you...

I know a Thai that imports 1960s cars into Thailand, gets them in Europe and USA, but they go in a container with spare parts so I do not know how they are declared. There are lots of used Japanese bikes and cars, imported used from Japan, so it is possible but I am sure you need to know the right people. There are a couple BMW bike shops in BKK, fixing and selling used BMWs. I guess it comes down to how much you love your car/bike, I thoink its better to leave it at home and buy something in BKK with available service + parts

I know this was a while ago.. but. I watched the DVD of Man with the Golden Gun with directors comments. Remember the car chase scene with the AMC through Bangkok? The movie asked the government to shut down some roads for the shoot. They said "no". But they still let them shoot the scene. The director said there was a Thai guy following the chase scene handing out baht for any damage done to cars. TIT
