I have no idea about the Thai post office.

I did once send just a postcard form Cuba back home.

I got back home and somewhere around a month and a half later the person called to let me know they had got the post card.

They had been a bit pissed at me as I promissed to send a postcard. I assumed they got it and they assumed I had forgotten to ever send it.

There comment was you could have delivered it faster by swimming home.

i stopped using the Nana "post office" years ago, after nothing ever got through. other mail sent by plain post from various BKK hotels and commercial packaging/parcel services shops got through with no problem.

anything sent either to or from Thailand using Thai or US regular mail via Parcel Post/"boat" rates -- allow 4 months for delivery.

the Phra Kanong post office will make you come pick up your packages if they weigh more than a canary's ass feather; too fukking taxed to lift them themselves.

NEVER use UPS to have anything of any value sent to you in Thailand. Thai customs regularly intercepts UPS packages at the airport, regardless of the dollar value of the materials listed on the customs slip, and charges you whatever they feel like as a "re-calculated duty", usually starting between 1500 and 2000b. They reserve that right by local law, and UPS pays them whatever they decide, then will refuse to release your package until you re-pay them that fee. Nevermind if there's only a package of cookies inside -- it'll cost you $$$ to get them.

I've never had any such problems with lateness, delivery errors, customs fees or anything else with FedEx or DHL.

US Express Mail tends to work just fine too.

In a lot of countries postcards are given lower priority than letters. My parents always used to put their postcards in a envelope and then post it: costs more but gets there quicker. Haven't tried it from Th. though.

Just an update on this..I received my package 2 weeks ago and it was opened up by customs as I expected. All they did was take a look at it and wrap everything in a layer of bubble packaging (!) and tape it back up with the orange customs inspected tape. I'm surprised that my package wasn't destroyed or confiscated because 1) All the lighters were filled with butane, I was an idiot and forgot to tell the guy I bought it from to pack them without the butane 2) The customs declaration wasn't filled out.

So even though I slag off customs quite a bit I have to hand it to them on this one they did a good job. So..in conclusion the Thai post office seems to be damn reliable. I shipped it the cheapest possible method via freight too and it reached my house a little over the projected 2 months time.
