The decision about whether to have a car or not in Bangkok is a tough one. Logically, I know I don't need one - in fact, to have one would be daft. But I'm still yearning to have one and get back behind the wheel again. The few times I've hired a car for the weekend made me really miss not having my own freedom, even if it's freedom to sit in traffic jams.

I can't remember the number of times I've woken up on weekends and thought about a quick trip to see Ayudhya or Hua Hin and gone back to sleep again cos the hassle of finding a taxi to take me there is not worth it.

A logical decision? Of course not. But after a year of not driving, I'm looking to be illogical.

I can not understand people living in Bangkok who DONT have a car.....

The freedome to get around whenever you want is great. And at the weekend just take off where ever you like. If you want to do any sports like golf or scuba diving etc then really transport is essential.

And driving around bangkok is not that bad once you learn the road system eg which lane to be in etc. Parking is easy...i just use valet parking at any hotel.

Best advice is to get a 4x4 or a pick up truck. They are easy to maintain and can easily sell them. Also the high up driving position I find makes it easier to drive.

I have a car and have mixed emotions on this subject. There is Good points and Bad points to each option. The best option that I cannot afford is to have a car with a driver then your talking, but instead of a driver I chose a Mia Noi.

At least I could drive her when I am drunk. The car stays parked.

I am also planning to buy a pick up truck.
The one I like best is the Toyota VIGO, as it has the most powerful engine available, than every %&§" 3rd car in Thailand seems to be a VIGO.

Does anyone know if I can get Toyota Tundra in thailand or a body kit for the VIGO?

What does a driver cost, Thaidup? I was under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that you could get one for 10,000 a month.

Paid 8k montly, until I realize he looks shaged in the daytime due to moonlighting.

With him at the wheels, the family's life praticallt at his hands, so upped him to 12k/month.

Looks fresher every morning now. No accidents before and after upping, though, better to be safe than sorry.

very good point about if not driving yourself the safety of you & even whole family is with your driver/taxi driver/tuktuk driver/bus driver/train driver/van driver etc.

and since most of us here is from the west with 'proper' driving education then well everything else being equal that should be reason enough alone to consider getting your own wheels (and driving) them!

I am thinking to get a car now...so I need help on this guys.

What are the processes to buy a car here?..Just say no finance needed...What included in the price of the car?

I visited couple dealers to check out...they gave me a print out with the prices of all the models..Those prices are final prices or can we still bargain on the given prices?

Second hand Toyota saloons are a good way to go.

I've got two of them. One's 20 years old with 275k kms and a 10 year old with 300k kms.

Both are great cars easy on gas and maintenance. Insurance is very cheap.
