Bangkok is safer than most cities its size (or smaller). Its noteriety for being a sex spot gets it more bad press than places that deserve it a lot more. I have ben on my own in BKK several times and have never felt threatened. Yes there are scams, but it broadly runs like this -
If some guy approached you on the street to talk you tell him that you';ve been to Bkk several times before and are not interested (invariably he is trying to sell you something from hotel rooms to dodgy gems). I have never had a guy approach me in bkk who wasnt trying an angle of some sort or other.
If a guy offers you a sure fire way to get rich, or invites you to his place for a game of cards etc etc - Just smile and say no, calmly but forcefully and politely.
Tell your dad that you're a big boy now.

bkk is safer than the big western city. not speak of south america or the carribeans. final point.
you have to act like a complete idiot to get into a physical fight.
as a newbie, there are many people trying to rip you of.
suggestions:
-never use a non-meter taxi
-never use a tuktuk
- use meter-cabs only
- never go with any touts showing you pictures of girls at some massage place
-avoid the ladyboys on the streets (wallet!!)
- dont get dead pissed in a bar so that you dont have idea where you live and what you are doing
- never believe any people who are telling you something is closed, for example a temple or a shopping mall
-never believe any tout who wants to take you around town almost for free
- never believe a tout who wants to take you to a silk shop
dont be scared and you will have the time of your life.

I've never had a problem from individuals trying to mug me or steal my hard earned but I've lost count the amount of times that I've had to dodge motorcys trying to kill me on the pavement/sidewalk. It's hard enough to negotiate the (pre APEC) potholes and lose paving slabs sober let alone after a few Klosters! I still keep coming back to Bkk so I guess I'm a sucker for punishment!
