Great post. "Does that cover it, MrJoe?" Are you taunting me CJ? Did you think I was taunting you? In case you did; I was not. I was going to tell the story and then I wondered why you didn't. Oh and yes, it's covered. Excellent work. (I have read in some accounts that he was decapitated, but I have always discounted those and agreed with the version you suscribe to.)

TPI, I checked chasingwhtrabitz's e-mail on this forum and it's listed as "private," so I can't ask him for the info you suggested. So chasingwhtrabitz, if you're listening, can you briefly educate me about the quality of water in BKK for keeping tropical fish? Can I just dump it in the tank, or are there additives that will kill the fish? Thanks in advance. (Reason I wonder about this, is the water at my TG's apartment seemed to sting a bit on freshly shaved skin -- my face that is BTW, a great history lesson, thanks CJ and MrJoe. -- Balls

No taunting. I am just depressed because I found out that seubeu means "innocently ignorant, naive" This ruins all my beautiful wickedness. I'm melting, I'm melting...

Of course I am far too dignified to gloat (fortunately you can't see my smirk ). Actually I forgot to point that one out; the innocence or naivete. ÝThat's the most benign form of this always mild term but it is sometimes used in a slightly more derisive way ie slow.

Ineresting tidbit (?): Sometimes Thais will use the word "seu" as kind of a backhanded compliment. Sort of like an affectionate term for someone who is somewhat simple and naive but straightforward and reliable. Urban folk tend to use it towards rural people with just a tiny dash of scorn.

So that's why that waitress was giveing me such a harsh look. I was trying to say beautiful or pretty" suay mak mak" however I must have been pronouncing it the way that word sounds "seu". Ha! i'm surprised she did'nt slap me or something...

My pal the ex Dean of Law/Senator etc told me yesterday that seu means honest, trustworthy; all the slow/simple/naive stuff is carried by adding -beu to it. Maybe just maybe Thais abbreviate it, truncate it, leaving the mildly pejorative -beu as understood by the listeners...this is just me speculating...just as they do with "bak wan" they leave the gun peeow unstated. But everyone knows it's there. Sweet mouth !! means Sweet mouth, (sour crotch) = an insincere flatterer. My wife just confirmed my hypothesis for seu being used as shorthand for seubeu.

Certainly it's shorthand but what I meant was a slight differentiation in usage; Someone might say "He is very SEU." to describe someone in benign way, but to say to someone "He is SEU BEU." is a bit more derogatory. Thais sometimes say SEU as gentler form.

Yes, I think that's about it. As to the army of flying monkeys singing their version of the Internationale, all I can say is: (fetching the hard Wachita River Arkansas stone and the Randall and starting to hone) "Patience, my angel."
