Thanks everybody for your help and suggestions. I have looked at a lot of information and I know that I will probably have to visit to make a choice. Does anyone know how much difference in housing costs there is between Bangkok, Pattaya and Hua Hin for equivalent accomodations? Just a rough idea?

I'm sorry but I tried clicking on the red lettering but I get a 'page cannot be displayed' message. I found the website for the US Embassy but I still haven't been able to locate the Expat Exchange. Any ideas? Thanks.

Well, the first thing was to make sure that you were clicking on the link. Since you are doing that, a couple of questions for you:
1) What kind of browser are you using (usually Microsoft IExplorer or Netscape). Some sites don't support all browser models and certain aspects (frames) don't work well with earlier versions of Netscape.
2) Are you seeing the URL correctly? If you "hover" your mouse over the link does it show "www.pattayaexpat.com" (or whatever) in the bar at the bottom left (this is for IE)?
Then, back to your questions. Housing costs can vary alot in Bangkok itself, depending on whether the area is heavily infested with Expats or is locals. But most Expats can't handle local housing. I would expect that Hua Hin is cheaper than Pattaya which is cheaper than Bangkok, in general. Pattaya would have the most fellow Expats of the three, but Bangkok in certain areas is probably just as Expat intensive. This will mean that when you have a hankering to have a conversation in English or want to have some food that's not cooked in a wok, these places will be better.
