I'm with the Doc on this one. Morchit-Cambodia-Morchit can be done in as little as 10 hours, maximum 13 hours for around 1300 baht. The most cost effective visa run, and now the hassles are less and less each time.

Did the Singapore run on a super cheap ticket earlier this year. Lots of good deals with a 4 star hotel included for 2 nights. If you're going to go to Singapore just time it for your next visa run. Can't see the point in taking a flight just for a return visa run, at least do some sightseeing.

If you have to be stuck in an airport then Singapore is good as there is free internet and free movies, plus it's big enough to take an hour to wander around all the shops.

TJ, just so you know next time, here's my report card on what you paid.

BTS-Bus Terminal moto @ 30 baht: Correct. What the moto guy was showing you was indeed the official price list for Thai and foreigner alike, so you weren't being gouged.

A/C bus and tuk-tuk fare: Correct. Just give the tuk-tuk guy 50 baht when you hop out and there will be no argument. If there is, just keep walking as nothing will come of it. Price for Thai is 40 baht so you are already paying a 10 baht surcharge.

Visa fee: Maximum to pay is 1000 baht.
Photo fee: 100 baht, well ok, l guess.

Anything else you paid was a rip off.

For anyone else reading this, if you can fill out the forms at the airport when you come to Thailand, then you can fill them out when crossing the border.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO PAY SOMEONE TO HELP YOU COMPLETE AN EXIT/ENTRY CARD!

Unless the border is incredibly busy, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY SOME GUY IN A UNIFORM xxxBAHT TO SPEED THINGS UP. Look at those people standing or sitting around. Most of them are from a tour group or a KSR bus, filling out forms. As a solo traveller just ignore all requests for extra fees. You will not be held up, just join the line, fill out the form and most of the time you will be be out of there in 5 minutes. Why pay 200 baht etc. for nothing? If you don't pay, they just move on to the next victim, err...customer.

So what l'm saying is when you're at the border just keep walking, ignore the touts etc. and you will not have to pay any extra fees. All these touts etc. are relying on your fears to get money out of you. It's broad daylight, people all around so what are they going to do if you don't payup? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

Well said, FP.

Posts like TJ ('You better pay them') are confusing to newbies and might be only made if verified and you're not sure you're making a fool out of yourself.

BTW The 100 baht you pay at the stamp county (entry booth) is actually not a photo fee.

It has to be paid because as a 'one hour tourist' you make use of all the facilities, but don't bring any income in.

If you're going into Cambodia for a longer time you don't have to pay the fee opposed to those who return right away.

Smegs, true, 5000 baht is pocket change for some. But the whole itenary takes so many steps (taxi to airport, flight to Udon, bus to Nong Khai, walking across the bridge, shuttle bus back to Nong Khai, bus to travel office in Udon, bus to airport Udon, flight to Bangkok, taxi back home) I can hardly imagine people finding this trip more convenient than the cheaper alternative.

Maybe some of you guys could organize a VRT (visa-run-table) once a month and go together and then maybe make it more entertaining that way. After you do the first one, everyone else just gets in sync with the rest for the next one.

Then by your reckoning, I overpaid by 300 baht. Not so much.

Let's be clear. I was repeating the statements of a man that had approximately 10 (he showed them to me)
Poi Pet/Cambodian visa stamps. He'd done this before, many times. It was his statement that he had had trouble at the border before if he did not pay the tour guides - that he had not, in fact, the first few times, and had been made to wait, been hassled, been delayed, etc.

I accepted his statements at face value vecause they made (and still make) a lot of sense. Your experiences were different? Good for you.

>BTW The 100 baht you pay at the stamp county (entry booth) is actually not a photo fee.

Fine. It's a 'one hour tourist' fee they charge the guy without a photo, after demanding such for the big black square on the entry form that says "photo". My companion was not assessed this fee. (he brought a photo)

He did mention this 100 baht 'one hour tourist' fee - I had assumed it was part of the 300 baht I had paid otherwise. (1000 + 300 + 100)

There's probably some truth in that. I think I'll stick to paying the little bit extra, and having some cautious fear. Cambodia is not a place I want to be detained for pissing off the wrong guard/official.

To finalize my contribution to this thread:

Keep your cool! If you don't get upset, you will not be detained or get in other kind of trouble.

True, 300 baht is not a lot (although I eat about 15 meals for it). Overpaying is foolish and should be avoid at all times.

BTW I also learned something... the phone fee is probably a photo fee. I didn't know it existed because I always bring a photo (like 10 or so) with me.

I have about 27 Cambodian visas in my passport. Never got into any trouble or paid. There are many foolproof tutorials on the board and on the Web.

There are rumours that Thailand will close its border at Poi Pet due to a quarrel about a temple.

In participation, today there were rows of Thais going into Cambodia to gamble which might be end soon.

Also hundreds of Thais employed in casino's fear for their job.

It would be disasterous for visa runners also. Then only Hat Yai and Laos would be left.

Hi,

I went to Poi Pet this week on a visa run.
A fairytail that turned into a nightmare !

- 7H00 AM, left Sukhumvit with the bus from Jacks Golf

- 10H30AM, arrived at the border
Procedures change all of the time depending on the powers in charge, now the new Thai Police chief wants everybody to personally stamp for exit and entry
* NO waiting line at Thai Immigration (outbound)
* people from Jacks Golf took care of entry and exit stamp for Cambodia, we could go have lunch in Golden Palace hotel.

- 11H30, qeueded up fo Thai Immigration entry stamp (inbound) and hhhhaaaaa, very slow there !
Waited outside for 2 hrs to get the stamp, very irritating, looked like obstruction from Thai immigration.
The ppl from Jacks provided bottles of water while waiting, thanks guys!
Finally arrived at the counter I had my stamp within 2 minutes !

- 13H30, back in the bus and left for bkk around 14H00

- 17H30, arrival in bkk Sukhumvit Asoke

So a bad experience this time, ppl from Jacks Golf told me that in the weekends they goto another border (30 min more travel) due to the high number of visitors in Poi Pet (mosty Thai gambles on a weekend trip).
Also very inconvenient this time were the children beggers while waiting at thai immigration, I pity those kids too but its organized crime. 1 guy gave some money to the kids and could get rid of them for another hour, so be aware !
And 1 kid was even sitting under the counter of the Thai Immigration, maybe the next time they will even sit on the counter !

Total cost with Jacks Golf is 2000 Baht including lunch and Cambodian visa fee. Dont forget to bring 1 passport photo also !

I think its not likely they close this border because most (if not all) casinos there a build with Thai money so there is a lot at stake !

This is bad publicity for Thailand, everybody was affected not only people on a visarun but in the waiting line there were also a lot of backpackers en Japanese tourists !

Cheers

The whole trip can be done yourself for around THB 1300. Now that you have to line up yourself, it is my opinion that the extra THB 700 is not worth it.

BTW For those who hate to get up early, there is now an alternative service to a more quieter border post near Chantaburi

Hi,

Might give those guys (thaivisarun.com) a try the next time although their webinfo is quite minimal.
How is the transport organized, is it really only 30 mins at the border ?
And they dont mention where they exactly go, is that a secret ? I suppose its Chantaburi yes !

I think Jacks Golf is using this Border passage also in the weekend when its too crowded in Poi Pet.

Will do 1 day before my visa expires so got an escpape when things not work out with them.

Cheers

Tilac
