Thai residents, would like to ask what you do when you stay at home in the evenings?

Is there a good selection of English TV channels available? Someone mentioned on another thread that DSTV is available from SOuth Africa.

Are libraries available with a good selection of books in English for bookworms?

The only English channels available are BBC World, the crap world news channel, and BBC Prime (prime? yesterday's re-reruns -- usually very old comedies). I know a couple of people who have Channel 4 via the Internet, but I believe you have to sign up for it in the UK, you can't do it here.

Hmmm...library. I've heard that word somewhere. The British Council may still have something, but it's been going downhill for years. They do mags and DVDs as well (or they used to).

No idea about satellite stuff.

If you're staying at home, dont forget to stock up on Vitamin C (6.4% ABV).

Nothing. That's why we go out a lot.

You must be joking. That's why we go out a lot.

Yeah right! The British Council one is crap. There is an American one which is also crap. Apart from that nothing.

So that's why we all go out a lot. Or we stock up on pirate DVD's and ring for food and girls to be home delivered.

I don't think the options of staying at home are as bad as some of you guys make out.

The TV options are fine. I usually watch the news channels (CNBC, BBC World etc) to catch up on business news, and then there is usually something worth watching on Star World, BBC Prime or one of the movie channels.

TGF is at university and doesn't usually get back until after 9. I might potter on the net for an hour during that time.

DVDs (both to hire and buy) are plentiful and cheap. English language magazines are same same. I buy the Economist (145 baht) and Spectator (100 baht.. much cheaper than price in UK, bizarrely) every week from Asia Books on Sukhumvit Road, and usually pick up the UK edition of GQ for 300 baht every month.

And books. That English-language bookshop in the Emporium is one of the best I've been in anywhere in Asia, including Australia. A great fiction section and prices comparable to or cheaper than in the west (eg Oxford classics for a uniform 250 baht).

Food options are endless too. Either cook, phone in or wander up the road for anything you like. I'd say the choices are as widespread as they are in any major city.

And the point of all this? Well, I guess I'm trying to poing out that the options of going out / staying in are the same here as they are in any other city in the world.

...and we, again, return to an issue of the individual -- some people are capable of occupying themselves creatively and productively, on a daily basis, and others are not.

For the type of person with little imagination, little self-worth, and little self-purpose, I can see how 'sitting at home' would be a boring alternative -- after all, 'going out' serves the main purpose -- distracting from the reality of life, especially if it involves lots of mind-numbing activities.

I'd hate to point out that excessive consumption of booze seems to be a common factor, again, or at least related to my hypothesis.

Kunikinoya? I was impressed myself. Then I walked into their Singapore, Orchard Rd. venue and got lost in the racks. Easily 5 times the size of the Emporium shop.

As for libriaries with a good selection. It'll cost you, but about the best Bangkok has on offer for the expats is this: http://www.neilsonhayslibrary.com/

Easy enough to get cable TV and internet for free, and birds for that matter. Millions of networking events at major hotels that you can crash. Free wine tasting, every week (plenty of local birds at these do's).
There's the Hash, every sport imaginable, cricket, soccer, rugby, dart & pool comps etc. Most of it dirt cheap.
As a last resort, if you are really bored, go to a blow job bar and blow your bag on top of some slappers head.

I would like to stop work for a year and live in BKK. With early retirement and savings I could scrounge up 15,000 US. Would this be enough to live on and not work for a year?

In a word, YES, it can be done but you have to do it in Pattaya or Udorn, Korat. I lived for one month on $750USD last year in Pattaya. I lived in a decent cheap hotel, I had a live in BG that I paid 6K per month and I went out two or three times a week. I had fun but it's tight. Check out http://www.pattayatalk.com for accurate up to date info.
