atl, All good here mate. I also do NOT see the big money sitting in a Thai bank account as an attractive option thus people should concentrate on the income requirement. People retiring in Aus,, have NO money, saved zero etc etc etc,, still get an old age pension of some 331,000 BAHT per year (couple), so qualify,, these are the poorest of poor in Australia, so once agian I say the rules are NOT unreasonable. I personally would not dream of retiring in LOS without an income stream in excess of 600,000 BAHT per year. That is what I consider is the minimum amount to have a reasonable standard of living.BKK would be more like 1 million+. Smiles all round Mel.

Quote: from Mel Gibson on 11:05 am on Sep. 2, 2007 haam sup, What I was REALLy trying to get across was that no-one should dream of retiring without a decent income stream. The rule asking for 130,000 BHT per year ( couple) is NOT over what 95% of Farang get,, the other 5% shouldn't be retiring if they have no money.
Mel, Prudent people will become more and more aware of the folly that is relying on a stable set of rules here. Your idea of who and who should not retire is probably valid, especially in hindsight with respect to LOS. The point you don't seem to get is in the way Thailand is doing it. Changing the requirement, effective immediately, no grandfather clause for existing retirees is brutal. Suppose they have the money, but it is not liquid (time deposit, CD, etc.) Mr. Thai Immigration says "Show me the money, in a Thai bank, for the last three months..." What are 60+ year old retirees from wherever to do? The real issue, IMHO, is what the motivation is, and where will it stop? What end are they trying to produce? This is targeted at arguably the LEAST offensive group of farangs in Thailand. Why? Speculation varies, but runs to "Thais want to raise some revenue", to "Thais want to discourage Chinese immigration, which is rampant, large families, etc.", to retaliation at farangs for the '97 crash. Personally, I favor the "Don't mess with our elections." angle, along with general xenophobia. Anyway, sorry to jostle your molecules, but I find this a disturbing development, and see, perhaps mistakenly, some bad juju ahead. Can I have your excess, so we both can retire here? hs

Quote: from DaffyDuck on 10:41 am on Sep. 2, 2007 If it were truly such a BIG embarassment to Thais, they would all already have been shut down, and bulldozered into oblivion... Not saying it's not a thorn in their side, but considering those listed places are a mere blip on the p4p horizon, I think it's more like most politicos have more important things on their minds...
I think the answer lies in the shift in power, and the priorities of the old guard. There have been too many Thai hands in the till to bulldoze Pattaya, Nana, or any of the venues we (and they) hold so dear. I agree that the politicians have had a lot on their plate, but until the general elections, they are essentially irrelevant. The military is fully in charge, and they connect up pretty well with the old boys of Thailand. Don't forget who is running for office... As far as farang P4P being the tip of the iceberg, agreed. But it is the tip that is visible, and Thailand is about appearances, not actualities. Someone who 'cleaned up' the 'dirty farang sex trade', even temporarily would enjoy tremendous popularity amongst ordinary Thais...hence my reference to Purachai, who should have had other things to do, but, instead, forever altered P4P in the places mentioned. Anyway, just some thoughts. I do think there will be new hurdles, although people on Tourist visas will least be affected. Agree about the US, moralism, and short-sightedness...makes me sick that I have to return. See you in Thaitown. hs

HS, Re: "Agree about the US, moralism, and short-sightedness...makes me sick that I have to return. " You got that one right. I'm sitting here in my "mountain redoubt" in the southwestern part of the States, surrounded by god-squadders and other lunatics who think they own the license on morals. Complete with "vice" squads busting quiet little Chinese venues. More importantly, after living in SE Asia for a few years, and then returning to the States to get my financial house sorted, I find the US really boring and prurient. Like a painting that has faded to gray. A shop-worn landscape peppered with a society that substitutes titillation for sensuality, Big Macs for Filet Mignon, corporate greed for living-wage jobs and humanism, frowns for sanuuk. The Decline and Fall in action... The thought of retiring upcounty with my (by then) Thai wife was an endearing prospect, but I'm not so sure about it anymore. Perhaps as ATL's wife said, make money here, holiday in LOS. Not the best the solution, maybe the only practical one in the long run. - Balls

Yeah, Balls, I'm only a few steps behind you. I am doing just that: returning to get my house in order. A bitter pill, but one that needs swallowing. I am totally afraid, however that I will have such low tolerance for the mentality in the US, that I may unconsciously sabotage my mission. And I have a bright, educated Thai woman, waiting for my return. Who knows what hurdles and causes for insecurity will be in place by the time I am ready to head back? On the other hand, after the election, things could swing the other way: there could be cash payments waiting for any farang who wanted to settle in Isaan. There could be 10 year visas renewable in any 7/11, like DTAC refills. The khlongs could be free swimming pools, filled with California Chardonnay, or Leo, if you prefer. There could be 'farang only' escalators, where stopping at the top to check your SMS, while 20 people are trying to step off, would be punishable by death... Nah. hs

You got to lot at the bright side. Just another reason to leave the farang wife at home and enjoys the fruits of young TG's that Thailand has to offer.

I'd take it one step further - make money in the US, move and protect the value of it by moving and keeping it abroad (not Thailand), and holiday in Thailand. Compartmentalize. The US is no longer a good place to keep assets, or maintain an investment (maybe with the sole and notable exception of AAPL stock), especially with a real-estate blow-up about to happen, the $$ losing an average of 20% of its value versus most foreign currrencies, and an ever widening trade deficit.... and more. Look at the $$$ versus the Baht 3 years ago, 2 years ago, and one year ago. Now compare that with the Euro versus the Baht in that same time period.

I think the biggest threat to one's wealth in the USA is the glut of lawyers that are driven by anyone's attempt to transfer any amount of money a person has saved in the USA into their pockets. Even if you have frivaleous lawsuits put against you, you need to pay your own lawyer to defend your case and are still out the bucks. You lose, you lose, you win, you lose.
