Feeding babies, and building infrastructure in 3rd world countries. Who the hell in their right mind could stoop so low? Such ignoble undertakings from the evil US to pour millions, (if not billions) into economies of underdeveloped countries. That's about as low as anybody could go. Bad UN!

I understand what epc is saying about NGOs. They are comprised of people who know little about the country they are 'helping', have huge budgets and a pre-conceived notions about what is best for the target of their 'benevolence'. Do-gooders, without a CLUE.
Of course, the guys who work for NGOs have NEEDS, too, so they end up skulking around guiltily, protesting the horrible sex-slavery publicly, and f_cking everything they can get their hands on, stealthily, of course.
Lots of adverbs today.

Geeze- you guys gave up the ghost, whatever happened to your wonder, and spirit, no not the kind in the bottle, I'm talking about a zeal to better mankind.
Now please don't paint me as Naive Nelly, I been around the block a time or two, and I know which way the wind blows, and I watch the parking meters for that matter, but I often wonder if my life could have been better spent, now that I've settled into my cozy little family life, and singing the mid-career blues. Last time this happened, I sold the house, cars, and went half way around the world for a couple of years.
Ok, before Mr. Moderation appears, I have to say something pertinent to the Forum. Wow, man, sure did love that BBBJ at Pegasis, last month!
And no, Ex-pat, decided that December just can't happen for me, so I'll be waiting for Radio Rabbit, and tuning in.

Yeah, NGO types have a pretty lousy reputation as do-gooding hypocrites. Could be that the rest of us are jealous of the salaries they get for doing sweet f.a. Anyway, they're about one notch up from embassy staff in the local roll of expat infamy, & well worth disowning as they piss off the locals as well.
Easy to get a job in LOS? Not that difficult at all, imho - & much easier if you're prepared to settle here first and do some local networking. A 35yo European guy in my condo heads up the IT operation of a middle-ranking multinational here. As he was recruited locally, they pay him a 'compromise' salary of B100k a month (plus medical insurance, 25 days paid holiday, &c &c). Peanuts compared with what he earned back home, of course, but he reckons that in purely material terms, B100k gives him almost as good a lifestyle in BKK as he was used to. In other respects, it's far better - he has a gorgeous live-in TGF, tons of friends, 2 ready-made kids he adores & gets to play around with BGs on the usual discreet terms. There's no way he'd have landed this job if he'd stayed at home.
Can be a bit daunting to come here with nothing already set up, I know. When I arrived, I did a TEFL course as an insurance policy. Plan A was to teach English until something came up in my own field (media). As it happened, I landed a decent job halfway through the 6-week course & then had to do some fancy footwork to finish it. Bit of a pity, in a way. In my very limited experience, Thais can be good fun to teach, and I really wouldn't have minded doing this for a few months.
