Zipper.
while i am only a visitor to Thailand,i agree with some of Yurunes points and him being a resident.
taxis fine by me,rarely used them but when i have i enjoyed the ride.
A/C is good and i am never in a hurry, trafic means nothing to me.
but if you are a resident i can understand if you do get annoyed at the time taken to get fron A to B.
and they are so cheap.

i also love the weather, the hotter the better for me.
easy to pop into a shop or bar to cool off,i hate the cold weather in the UK.
having to scrape the ice off my car at 5am is no fun, give me the heat anytime.

and as Yurune says Phuket has many beaches to visit.
if you want o be alone and just chill out, just get a motorbike/tuk tuk/taxi and there are many fine places to be found.
if Phuket(patong) is too commercial, visit other places.

So Zippy,

Other than incessant Yeh- butting, what's you're goddamn point?

You've said you don't want to live here, others, (and wiser members like Arcadious and Yurune) have stated their opinions, and still on and on with the yeah butts?

Are you playing the members here, or do you have something to say? If you don't care for BKK just say so and move on, and stop the head games.

First point to make is that when you live and work in LOS, you experience it very differently from a tourist. I expect that applies just about anywhere.

At any event, I was once here on a month's holiday, and did indeed get fed up during that last week - needed to get back to 'real life'. Since BKK has become my real life, though, I never get bored.

What do I like about the place?

1) BKK's 'buzz'. Life red in tooth and claw. How can you not feel 100% alive being part of a place like this?

2) Thais & Thaidom. They're so completely 'different', and yet so tolerant (usually) & accommodating. First time I came here, I thought I'd just beamed down from the starship Enterprise, & I still feel like that to some extent. So much to learn about what makes them tick (& the corrollary - what makes Westerners tick). I don't expect ever to finish this journey, but what the hell. Thais have their faults, some of them quite severe ones, but on the whole I think they're the most fascinating people I've ever encountered. Wonderful to be allowed to live & work among them.

3) Expats. Come in all shapes and sizes, of course, but there's a lot of very interesting & unconventional people here. Making friends is easy. I particularly like the fact that you're so much a farang first, and anything else you might be second, that the usual petty nationalistic sillinesses largely evaporate.

4) P4P. Still VERY important for me. Not so much a matter of sex pure & simple; now I have the opportunity to get know some of the girls over a lengthy period of time and so they can become 'friends' (or very part-time mistresses). If you like women, but have never been very comfortable with the intensity of one-on-one relationships, this is an excellent arrangement. Anyway, I like & get on well with the BGs as a group & enjoy them to the fullest - much more so than when I was a tourist. Giving this up would be a huge wrench now.

5) Eye candy. Just looking at beautiful women makes me happy, and I'm particularly inspired by the Asian variety. In BKK, extraordinarily pretty girls are everywhere - in the office, the BTS, the shops, the streets, you name it. OK, BKK isn't unique in this respect. But combine this with the Thais' beautiful, laid-back manners, and I find I'm in a good mood most of the time.

6) Food. Thai food, obviously, but not just that. If you know where to go, you can eat just about anything, and eat well. I've eaten far better British 'pub grub' in BKK than I ever did in London.

Drawbacks:

1) Intellectual stimulation. I DO miss London's museums, art galleries, bookshops, etc. As is often remarked, analytical thinking & controversy are not Thai strong suits - so most of that kind of stimulation you need to get from other expats & visitors. Thank GOD for cable TV and the internet, because I think I'd have found this quite a major problem otherwise.

2) Weather. I find the hot season oppressive, and actually miss the English winters. The rainy and 'cold' seasons are quite tolerable, though, once you've acclimatised. Ý Ý

You pegged it in a not-so-small nutshell! Compared to MANY other places, esp. Europe and the USA, LOS rules! Given the right financial opportunity/window opening up...I AM SO THERE!

Yurune -

If I'm not mistaken it was a reference to "bitching", which is a verb.

A bitch is a noun, and I tend to reserve that term for special people, and female dogs of course. Lets not get special here. OK? Lets' take it offline. You have a PM. Feel free to PM back.

Gents,
I've not lived or stayed for long periods in LOS (pity I think) but Arcadius et al have said it all for me.
There is only one more selfish aspect that I would add, and that I gain a degree of peace / sanity from being amongst the frenetic pace of BKK - strangely addictive - maybe it's just me..
Presently this helps me tolerate a lot of crap when I return home.
I wonder if that would continue if I were to stay longer?
Cheers
Liam

Wow...this is an old one dragged up from the past...and the thread never did establish if I was a hippie or not.

It's horses for courses, some people tire of wherever they are, I've now been out of Bangkok for over a year. Did I love every minute of life whilst I was working there? yes I did, the things that first thrilled me about Thiailand still thrill me.

Have I loved every minute of life since I left?..yes also. London is a great city, there are certain 'hobbies' I have which cannot be done to satisfaction in Thailand and whilst away for forget them, however return to them and the thrill of that becomes just as great.

I can return to BKK to work if I want, I've declined several offers since I left, being away from it has been just as good as being there. It's my choice even though I do miss things about BKK terribly.

Always look at the positives and you'll be fine, if you are negative in your outlook it will work the other way. One of the most tiresome things I have ever encountered in BKK is that dumb bastard down the bar whining on about "Thais this Thai's that" move away if it's so bad.

Sorry bit of a ramble......

I have to agree it's ones outlook on life that carries you thru the day. Let me add, my retirement money goes way further in LOS then the US and I have the added benefit of pulling younger babes.

Gents,
Only realised how old the thread after I posted, but it had me interested.
Appreciate the ramble Yurune, and agree with you and BigDUSA about the 'positives'. Certainly the economics can make LOS a stimulating retirement - but I have a few years to consider this.
It's a great place to visit in the meantime, probably a great place to live, and I guess those that whine about it can always vote with their feet.
Cheers,
Liam

One problem I see the women I have meet tend to be empty vessels. They are not intellectually curious. I do enjoy good conversations about current events and other interesting topics.

In their defense they are good in bed and I certainly enjoy all the personal services they provide.
