Hey everybody I dont really get to post I just usally read stuff.
But I was wondering if anyone here could help me as to find a job in the fiancial industry in bangkok. I hold a ser7 and 66 license i'm not sure if that'll help in thailand but at least it show that I have basic knowledge of the industry. I'm working for american express fiancial as a fiancial advisor, but it feels like i'm in a rut and I should fit in fine with in the culture as I am thai but just dont speak it. right now i'm making 40k a year I could take more or less of that amount. so any suggestions or guide in the ride direction would help.

I assume by 'financial advisor' you mean 'personal financial advisor'. There are almost no jobs in Thailand for 'personal financial advisors'. The reason is that Thais have very few instruments to invest in.

They are not allowed to legally invest in overseas bonds and equities, the bond market in Thailand is extremely small immature and illiquid (bonds are only really held by insurance companies and some of the investment management companies). To the best of my knowledge there are only 8 licensed investment management companies in the country. These invest in domestic equities and usually non-traded bonds (they issue short term paper to domestic companies). They then sell 'high yield' bond funds or equity funds to the general public.

Your best bet is to try and move from your current job to equity sales at a brokerage and then move to Thailand to sell domestic equities to overseas funds. There are at least 15 foreign brokerage houses based here (and probably another 15 local brokerages trying to sell Thai equities to overseas funds and local mutual funds. A reasonably good salesman can earn in excess of US$250k here although I would guess that starting salaries are much nearer US$40k.

Incidentally I disagree with your view that 'you will fit in well here'. The one things that seems to really bug Thais, is Thais who cant speak the language or cant speak it properly. It is somehow regarded as 'unpatriotic'. Any attempt by a none Thai to speak Thai is welcomed but proclaiming that you are Thai but cant speak the language will get you a lot of stick.

hi r,

i tried to get a job in financials in bkk around 2 years ago. it is very very difficult, if you don't know the right people. falangs are very expensive compared to local workers for the firms. then they have to apply for a work permit for you, which means additional costs. the only chance you really have is being sent to bkk from your company. additionally, the thai market is done from singapore by most firms. sorry.

bux

yea I figured its not to big of a market maybe i'll get lucky and make alot of money here and just go there work any job..lol. in terms of being specifically an advisor I wasn't looking for that I figure that wouldn't be a big hit there the advice bout working for a brokerage firm is a good idea I eventually want to work as a investment banker. so time will tell maybe i'll get lucky and land with a company who'll meet my request.
i was wondering if there is a high demand for any other type of jobs in thailand?

When you say 'you are Thai'....Thai passport holder or ethnic Thai, but non passport holder. It will make a big difference.

The jobs you see advertised (at least the ones I've noticed) -- so I assume there's a demand for people qualified for these jobs -- always seem to be for English teachers, sub-editors (mainly for the Post and Nation, although the latter seems to employ part-timers without WPs) and 'managerial' positions, often in the hospitality industry, e.g. managing bars for foreign-owned groups like the Irish Exchange/Irish Exchange/Dubliner or hotels. You also see jobs advertised for editorial staff/writers (often don't come with WP), diving instructors (ditto), etc. But I know one Englishman who got a job that wasn't advertised, as a gang boss for a foreign-owned/run construction/re-fitting firm. He speaks fluent Thai and got a WP. (I suppose he must be a 'consultant', but he's got no quaifications. TIT.)

A friend of mine is a UK based equity dealer and recently had an interview for a similar position in the BKK office of a large US based company. Despite being fully qualified and have the recommendation of the dealer he's applying to replace, he doubts he'll get the job - it's currently going through first their HK then their NYC offices before he even hears if he's getting a second interview.

My friend has done all the spadework - networking with the right people, mostly brokers etc. It was only through the recommendation of a broker that he was able to put himself forward for the job.

It's much more important who you know, if you're trying to get into the finance industry in BKK. And even then it's very very hard to get a decent position.

I'm surprised to hear that there are very few opportunities in the personal financial advice sector in Bkk. I keep getting calls (probably once a month) from financial planning companies (including some from large western banks) wanting to talk about personal financial planning. They are all farang. I dont know how they got their jobs here, but there must have been opportunities at one time.

I would have thought there was a good niche market in advising expats on personal finance issues.
