Back to Penbelly's question. US$15000 for a year is 50,000 baht a month. Of course it's possible to live here for that if you're disciplined and are prepared to adapt a certain lifestyle (but given some of your previous posts, I doubt that it's your thing).
Most of the english teachers here will be on that, or less, and they get buy.
I wouldn't want to do it myself.. not in Bangkok anyway. But as someone else said, it's eminently possible in a smaller place like CM or Isaan.

I have a Kiwi friend who is living in Ayutthaya with his Thai wife on his savings (had a heart attack working in Manila last year) and he is doing OK. Not much for extras though (definitely no P4P).
However, he is going back to work this fall because he knows that if he lives another 20 years (and his doctors do not see why he can't), the money he has saved over his career will not be enough.
Unless you have a continuing pension, or a source of steady income, quitting your job and blowing your retirement to live in LOS for a year is idiotic.
(unless you plan to emulate 'Bike Racer')

He's considering blowing his pension to come here for a year? In that case, I retract my previous post. I was under the impression that he had assets that generated US$15,000 a year and he's use that income, NOT that he was blowing his entire stash.
If his complete assets are only US$15,000 it can mean one of only two things. Either he is a young fella, in which case blowing his savings isn't going to cause him irreparable harm because he can replace it easily in later life.
Alternatively, he's an older fella. If that's the case and he's managed to accumulate only 15 grand in a working life, it's reasonably safe to assume that he's the kind of guy Thailand will eat alive and spit out in just a few months.

Seriously, though, what idiocy can possess people to take their entire savings and head off on a crazy adventure that is bound to drain them, chew them up, and spit them out... without any plans to either replace their savings, or having an option to generate revenue.
Boggles the mind -- but I guess in that respect, LOS is a kind of Natural Selection™ mechanism...?

I am trying to live on income of farm in northern thailand.
My income is at present 40,000 a month but will double by december, triple by next june hopefully.
Here is the cost of living north
As its rural, pork, poultry, and beef is cheap.
Pork is 60-70 baht a kilo
Beef 90 baht
Chickens whole 60 baht
Fruit all about 30 cents to a dollar a kilo
depending.
Ie mangoes 3 for 10 baht
In short food is very cheap
100% cheaper than city
I fly oriental airlines at 1550 baht a ticket to bangkok twice a month.
Go to pattaya
We have a condo but now rent it out at 12,000 a month
so stay in a hotel twin royal palace is excellent value at 1050 baht as its almost 4 stars.
I usually get sex free as we run escorts also Via miss tam
A friend.
I go chang rai weekly 450 hotel with sing song.
Two motor bikes
one truck
one car
They are included all in farm expenditure.
I go out weekly here
fortnightly in pattaya (once with family)
Once alone
To pick up money
and f*** new girls
I find 60,000 a month in country is king stuff
But quietly
half that.
