Good question about the motivation behind this.... reminds me of the financial crisis of '97-98. I recall George Soros was blamed for the currency collapse across Asia. Could not have had anything to do with local banking practices or lack of corporate governance.

Seems the same is happening again... current bad things in LOS are a result of bad stuff left over from former PM and foreigners. Could not be as a result of any current government policy.

I imagine many of these will get swept aside after the election but as was said previous, when? Not much sanook in LOS these days.

Beware of too many Duck eggs in one basket...they are due for a 'correction'.
Ah, if only I had a dime for everyone that keep, well-intentioned, giving such warnings.... (Actually, I kinda do - several years ago, I started a practice that everytime someone 'warned' me about AAPL stock, I would purchase 10-20 shares, back when the stocks was around $15-$25. Worked out nicely for me, while the collection of brokers, analysts, and experts have pretty much all seen diminishing portfolios, large losses, and even suicide... I always found that kinda amusing).

In all seriousness, I appreciate the concern and advice, and I don't have all my holdings in that single stock - though my holdings are all in business that I know, and whose business models and road maps I know well (hence, I used to have Pixar stock, now Disney; and straight Disney stock, picked up during the Eisner low-times, which is doing nicely now, for example).

Still, the 'correction' you speak off is a) hardly a concern, and b) time to pick up more stock c) just happened a few weeks ago when the market collapsed, and AAPL dropped to $112 for a day.

So, with all of these expats high-tailing it outta here in the weeks and months to come, there ought to be some nice properties dropping on the market at good firesale prices, shouldn't there?

I just got another email from a british millionaire that I sold a condo to off of ekkamai...empire house to be exact..

he wrote...."steve, I am getting rid of this condo while I can still break even..I hope you and the wife are well.."

I had told him not to worry about the government at the time....man how things change...

I dont feel bad as this guy has money to burn...I was lucky to meet him as he was in bkk on his first trip and dropped 17 million baht on a furnished condo...on his 5th day..paid cash....my commission was huge..

I charmed him enough for him to give me an extra key and my parents stayed at his place on their 2nd trip...

so, why is he in a panic to get rid of it, now? If he's got money to burn, and he's not paying a mortgage on it, he should just wait it out.

It's invariably those with short term lookouts that panic, for lack of seeing further ahead than the next month/quarter.

DD...

how is LA bro? I already miss the 80 degree weather everyday...its hot as shit down south, but good to be home..

this guy is a character...he emails me everytime there is something going on in Thailand asking about his condo and he knows I quit that job in feb 2004.....

but you are correct 17 million baht to him is a piss in the bucket...I guess he just likes busting my balls, but he is a good guy..

he sent me $500 for my wedding with a card that just said "you take of that girl!"...he took me and mrs atl out to dinner one night....

LA is hot, kinda like a good BKK day in April or so, just without the humidity...

and you'd dare to buy a house/land/condo in a country where the laws on ownership could change and force you to lose your ENTIRE investment ?

You're assuming I'm not aware of that risk?

I don't know if there are in fact many countries where property ownership is a guarranteed ongoing right.
Example, even here in Australia, the government CAN in fact recind your ownership and take your land at anytime. Of cause there is a clause about reasonable compensation etc,, but that is no guarrantee.
If condo prices in BKK drop around 20%, I will be looking for one myself.

Mel.
