You only need the medical certificate (from a cheapie clinic is ok) and the letter from the embassy for the initial application. They are not necessary for renewals. You only need the one original if you are applying for a bike and a car license, well they did at sukhumvit 97 many years back, but it would not surprise me if they asked for two originals at some places. If you change your address and you want to change the address on your license, you need a new letter from the embassy. The address of your residence (or the address you get the embassy to put on the letter) determines which motor registry office you must go to. Actually, the Oz embassy no longer issue a letter. They give you a stat dec form to fill in and a sample to follow and they notarise it. Cost me about Baht 800 a few months back and did the job.

BKKbanger, My license definitely fails the perforated edge test and also the yellowy strip thing. However I am not convinced it is a fake. My license looks exactly like every other license that all the staff have in my office. We cant all have fakes!! Is yours a Thai driving license or an international Thai driving license? Mine is a Thai driving license. I am checking with the Transport Department to see if it is real or not (the records are on computer).

Hey Mine fails all tests except the stamp over the photo. I got my one year Thai Driver's license at the office in Nonthaburi myself so it is definietly legit.

Well the tests are very subtle. You will need good eyesight for most of them and very strong light. The perforations in particular are very difficult to see. I tried to find my old licence but I seem to have lost it. It did not have any of these features as far as I recall. The colour test may also be best carried out at night under streetlights. If it changes colour and takes on a metallic look under HPS lights then you can rest assured. Has anyone else noticed a security feature on their licence?

Banger.. My bike and car licenses are as you say, but they are only a few months old and you hand in the old ones when you renew (or I did). The old licenses were definitely different so they may have had different security markings. Not too sure what you mean by the perforations, as mine was cut down and laminated at card size, but thinking back, I think you are correct.

Quick, Duh, of course. How silly of me most people must have them trimmed during lamination. Thanks for pointing that out. Mine still has them on the top edge. So folks don't get alarmed if you fail the perforation test. As to the strip I have a photo if anyone wants to see and the flash nicely picked up the metallic nature of the paint or whatever it is. As to handing in my old one, no way. I just wish I hadn't lost it.

I understand it is a multiple choice written test. No driving experience necessary. If you want a translation of the questions I think it costs an extra 500THB. (You may be able to negotiate your own, better, rate for this). If you want help - a copy of the answers - that is also an extra 500THB (or whatever you can negotiate with the examiner on the day). It is a good idea to pay for help as that way you are sure of scoring 100% and passing your driving test.

I have already a thai driving license for a year and I needed: - home certificate (from embassy) - stamped translation of original driving license - copy of work permit or non-immigrant visa - Medical certificate - pass the official eye view tests on 2nd floor. - 2 pictures - 105 bahts Now, it is expired already for several months and i'm wondering what are the documents required for renewing. Anyone knows ?

As far as I know a few months expiry is no problem to continue the licence. You will need not need the translation of your farang licence. My original was scrutinised last time but I was not sure why as no copy was asked for. Whether you need your home certificate/ crap embassy letter is debatable. Some people apparently are not asked for it on renewals. I have a photocopy of the original with a new date which suffices for renewals. A medical certificate is not required.

1. Thai driving test (ha ha) : The transport office at Saphan Hin, Phuket will give you a translation of the Thai Highway Code half an hour before the written test. The test papers will aslo be in English (no charge). The driving test has been marginally tightened up - it now involves driving round a course. Before, the m/c test was to drive out of one gate, 50 yards down the road, and back through the other gate. The car test involved driving between two sets of bollards, reversing round a corner and parking less than 10 cm from the curb! 2. To get your license: If you are here on non-O visa all you need is a copy of your passport (or two if you want both licenses), showing the visa, and a health certificate, plus the certificate for passing the driving test, for the first occasion. You will get a license for one year. Thereafter all you have to do is turn in the old license for a new one each year for 3 years. Thereafter you will get a five year license. No hassle.
