OK 1 yr license is up for renewal. You cannot renew until it is expired (Thai Logic), but I got a 5 year license now. Requirements for renewal:

1. Fill out one page form
2. Original Passport with signed copy
3. Original Work Permit with Signed copy
4. 506 THB

Time 1 hour, took longer to drive back and forth to the bureau.

A western friend got his thai DL recently, for bikes at least. It seems the driving test was an easy joke and the written one a whole different kind of joke. Electronic multiple choice that made no sense in english. There were supposed to get the answers but didn't and during his third attempt he went to kick a bit of a fuss and the teacher or some other girl gave them to him - she could because she knew the original questions in thai. To this day that friend couldn't figure out how the translations were made...

That friend claims after 1 year he will get the international DL and upon returning to france will be allowed to drive all kind of bikes.

Which brings the discussion to miss AP of the year who got her thai DL painlesly in a couple of hours last week. How could she use it overseas?? Does she need to wait one year to get an international one and could she switch it to a local one if she became EU resident??

license doesn't have to be expired, but you can't renew your permit too early. I think it has to be within one month of expiration

and I also hear that you can drive around on an expired license for up to one year

a buddy of mine, when he was getting only one year licenses, would use the expired one for 10 months after it expired, then finally renew, getting nearly two years out of a one year license

now that we both have 5 year licenses, he doesn't do that

My first Thai driving license was for one year.

When I went to get it renewed it was at least 12 months expired but this was not a problem and I was given a new 5 year license.

I have said it before, and I will say it again. Getting a drivers license in Thailand is a complete waste of time.

I have been in Thailand for 6 years, had 3 accidents, and stopped numerous times, and never once got in trouble for not having a license.

The only thing a license in Thailand gets you, is another piece of paper that the police can take from you and force you to pay a larger bribe.

Standard procedure when dealing with the police in a traffic stop:

1) Do not pull over unless you will absolutely 100% hit the guy if you don't. If not, keep going and fly him the middle finger and laugh. THEY WILL NOT CHASE YOU! Too lazy!

2) If you do get pulled over, turn off the car and take the keys out of the ignition and put them under the seat. NEVER GIVE THEM ANY DOCUMENTATION! THEY WILL ONLY HOLD IT FOR RANSOM! The only person that has the right to take your passport is your consulant. NO ONE ELSE HAS THE RIGHT!

3) Never, and I mean never, speak Thai to them even if you can speak Thai. That increases the price you are GOING to pay.

4) Answer "I do not know" to every question asked.

5) When asked if you want to go to the police station, you promptly tell him yes.

6) He will then ask you to pay the fine at the car. In which you agree. Never pay over 100 baht for a unknown stop. YOU WILL PAY MORE IF HE GETS YOUR KEYS OR LICENSE OR PASSPORT! DON'T GIVE IT TO THEM, DUMBASS'S! You do, and you deserve what you pay!

7) No seat belt = 500 baht, red light = 200-300 baht, illegal u-turn = 50-100 baht, bus lane violation = 200 baht

8) Pay him and then start the car and get out of there. If you can, tell him thank you in your best Thai. This gets a good response after speaking no Thai at all previously.

These are the rules that I follow, and I have never had a problem using them.

Can you get insurance for your car without a Thai driving license?

My car is bought on credit through the company and it was a requirement that I had a Thai license.

The license has also proved useful as a form of ID when checking into hotels (sometimes they ask for your passport) and at the bank.

But I agree with you about the cops. Even having the lisense I don't show it when I get stopped....

Getting insurance for my car is not a problem, as my car is in a very important family name here in Chonburi.

Checking into hotels, if they ask for my I.D. I tell them in Thai that I will just go somewhere else if they don't want my money. Never had a problem. Money talks, and bullshit walks.

Always use passport at the bank though. I do not take a chance with a piece of shit Thai I.D. or drivers license.

I do the same, even used it to get the Thai price for entrance into some two-tier venues

Just renewed my Thai license down at Soi 99 last week. They wanted:

- Signed copy of passport
- Two photos
- Letter of residence from my embassy
- Old license

Took about 30 minutes, and the new license is valid for 5 years 3 months (up to my birthday).

License cost Bt 505 but the letter from the embassy cost Bt 1,700+ just to repeat information I had given them. What a scam!
