My TGF stays in a rented house in a small town about 40ks south of Buriram. Its a large Farang style house with one Farang neighbour that I rented back in January, but I have only stayed their for a couple of weeks initially with the intention to get back soon as possible. Today my lady called me because she had been visited by the Police who were enquiring about any Farangs who may be staying there and wanted passport copies etc. The cop explained that they had a new directive to check on all Farangs well being etc because they are apparently now valued for all the money they bring into the country and because of the many cases where girls had ripped guys off or they had been assaulted or even died in unexplained circumstances with the resulting bad publicity. Guess her plans to bump be off for the life insurance when I go back have now been buggered!! She explaned that I was not in Thailand at the moment and that she was not exactly sure when I would next visit and ther cop went on his way without taking my details. Not sure what to make of this, possibly something has been lost in translation due to the language barriers but find it hard to believe there is a new benevolence to us Farangs so far out in the boonies. Maybe this was a one off cop trying to get some merit by catching out an overstayer..................and line his pocket with a few baht, not sure? or is their a tough new immigration clampdown? So perhaps a warning to any guys who are in the countryside and a couple of days over a visa etc and not to worried, it seems the cops are on the prowl and best to do the visa runs in time just in case the boys in brown come knocking.

===================================== How full was the casino bus when it departed and does it make any stops enroute? ===================================== They keep a few empty seats to accomodate people picked up at Bangna. Other than that, no stops at all. The bus had still a few seats at 4.00am and they left 4:15 when all the seats were filled.

Had to get to Cambodia over the week-end and so, having read some of the excellent advice on this thread, I started off at 3 a.m., prepared to try three of the recommended spots. Got to Lumpini about 3:15 a.am. and had the taxi drive round the entire perimeter of the park. No buses in sight. Ah well....Just as well if I wasn't going to make the 4 a.m. departure, I had Asoke opposite Soi Cowboy to try at 6 a.m. and the coffee shop opposite Ekkamai bus station at 10 a.m. So just to make sure, having read the advice, I got out of the taxi and started walking around the exit/entrances of the Lumpini MRT. No buses. No coaches. No mini-buses. I knew the HSBC bank building that was mentioned was nearer to Silom, so I start to walk from the Lumpini MRT to the Sala Deng MRT on the same side of the road. Just as I was approaching that stretch of shops set back from the road with the Japanese restaurant with white lettering on a blue background, I noticed a delux coach draw up on the other side of the road next to the park, facing the Lumpini MRT, but very much nearer to the Sala Deng MRT, and a load of people get on. Skipped over the road. Three-quarters full already. Yes, 100 baht to Cambodia. Got in and wow.........left at 4:20 and arrived at the border by 7:15 a.m. What a non-stop express ride. Thank you Dr.Love. Nice tip there. Once there I followed the stream of people only to find that I was in the current of Cambodians walking from the border to their places of work. Got a motor-cycle back to the border crossing and queued. Resisted the attempts by the touts to sell me a Cambodian visa. Maybe that was my first mistake. After a long wait, I got stamped out on my re-entry permit and crossed the bridge to the Cambodian Customs and Immigration office. Toyed with the idea of not entering Cambodia but just turning around and entering Thailand again, but you hear of so many stories coming out of the Thai Immigration department in Sathorn Soi 3 that I just didn't want any more hassles when I got back. Filled out the Cambodian visa form. Paid my 1000 baht. Was then asked to sign another little bit of paper twice, after a wait of ten minutes. I signed. Then was asked for an extra 400 baht because I was going back to Thailand on the same day. Reluctantly paid. My passport was already stamped for exiting Cambodia, so I just walked back for the next inevitable queue of Sunday morning people wanting to get back into Thailand on the same day, most of whom I had already had the pleasure of queuing up with on the Thai side in order to get into Cambodia. Got stamped in to Thailand eventually. Relief...relief.....gasp...gasp.... Then, no sign of the tour bus that leaves at 12 noon. Only 9:45 a.m. Asked a tourist policeman where the buses leave for Bangkok....Second mistake. Or was it the eighth ? I had to get a motor-cycle in to the town 6 km away to catch the bus. It turned out that it was the Government bus., about to leave at 10:30 a.m. Decided to take it. Bought a ticket. Big mistake. Grabbed some breakfast. Just had enough time to get on the bus. 10:30 a.m. on the dot. Wonderful. But I hadn't reckoned on the bus stopping every ten or fifteen km to get someone on or to leave someone off. I was also lucky enough to be seated under a drippig air-con unit and beside a 70 year old Thai alcoholic of the year who insisted, bottle in hand, on taking down his trousers and approaching various young women in the coach and shouting all the way in a conversational way. By the time I reached Bangkok, stepping out of that coach at about 4:00 p.m. was like escaping from hell. Next time, if there is a next time, I'll follow the complete gambling bus tour route and return on the 12 noon coach to avoid being tempted to murder an unknown drunkard on a Government bus. But I must say, once again, thanks doc for the hot tip. The journey there was great. So fast. No problem. But it is getting a bit popular. Maybe next time, I might have to book my seat the night before, if I can, somehow.

1- the buses are straight opposite the HSBC building. 2 - If you have no entry/exit stamp from Cambodia, the Thai immigration officer will sent you back to the cambodian side. 3 - No need to pay extra money. I've paid several times though (not more than 100 baht) but nowadays I do the 'ignore' trick.... just look the other way and if you hear the stamp being added to your passport, stretch out your arm and ignore all pleas for money. He even doesn't ask me now... 4 - I don't think you can make a reservation. Maybe only those getting in at Bang Na.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread and for not getting what I wanted from searching, but it might be useful if recently-experienced brothers, having done overland visa runs to Cambodia would post their up-dated information. As far as I gather, you can go independently from Mo Chit to Cambodia and do the whole thing yourself......maybe at extra cost and hassle. There is ( or was ) the run from the coffee shop opposite Ekkamai bus terminal at 2000 baht all in, departing on certain days at 9:30 a.m., that thaiviarun.com advertise. Then, there is the Jack Golf mini-van runs at 6 a.m. Are they the same ones out of Sukhumvit/Asoke opposite Cowboy ? Where exactly are they ? Any phone numbers ? And then there is mention of Ban Laem. Where is that from ? Any phone number and details ? And the last one, which seems to be the best ( I could be wrong ) is the express gambling bus from Lumpini at 4 a.m. in the morning at 100 baht single fare there and 100 baht for the return journey at noon., which seems to be the fastest, overland. Any recent info on all or any of these visa run arrangements would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

1) Yes, take a bus to Aranyaprathet. Then a short Tuk Tuk ride to the border. The bus is around THB 200 one way, tuk- tuk around 70-80 baht. 2) Jack leaves from Suk Soi 12. The ones opposite Soi Cowboy are different from Jack. They are called Fine Day. They charge THB 2,000 for a normal run and THB 2,200 for a six person trip. Fine Tour advertises in the Bangkok Post. 3) Ban Laem is in Chantaburi Province. A little closer than Aranyaprethet. Jack leaves every day to Ban Laem and Aranyaprathet. Ban Laem is much smaller and preferred. 4) The fare for the express casino bus has been raised to THB 200 one way, THB 300 return for foreigners. Still a great way to go.

I think you'll still need the proof of ticket out of Thailand though, right? As discussed in the new visa rules thread. BTW Fast Freddy, I think the cops were lying and just wanted to check on your visa. Take care of you, yeah right. They are terrible liars sometimes.

I've heard of one case where the guy needed to show a plane ticket out of LOS and surely the coppers were not checking the safety of foreign visitors but more likely looking for someone they could arrest or at least squeeze for some tea money
