Another advantage of buying second hand is that you can easily see how the building will be maintained – therefore you can see first hand the real value you will get for the maintenance fees you will be paying.

Not condos but I bought a new house in Pattaya a couple of years ago and just finished building a house near Udorn.
I bought/built them to live in and not as an investment. I am in my golden years and plan to retire yet again in a little over one year and will split my time between the two. The house in Pattaya is in my daughter's name and the house in Udorn is in my wife's name.
I frankly prefer the house in Udorn since it is on 2 rai of land and, when completely finished, will be quite a nice place. Nothing fancy but large enough to swing a cat in and get away from the wife when necessary. The downside is it is some 80 kilometers to the nearest golf course and there are no bars closer than 40 kilometers.
The house in Pattaya is basically the same size but the land is much smaller and the downside is it is close to both golf courses and bars.
All I own are three sets of golf clubs and a car, which I can walk away from if need be.
I would have had no problem buying second hand and would probably have preferred doing it. I just couldn't find anything in Pattaya at the time and there was nothing up-country without the building project.

If I were buying a house, I would buy new as you did or build as others have done, but for condos second hand is the way to go this is even the recommendation of some condo developers.
