I think it's fair to say it's not so much an Isaarn as a class thing. I would venture that a girl from the slums of BKK and with an "unseemly" background would feel just as awakward or even intimidated. It wasn't long ago when only the elite upper class got tertiary education and even now the middle class typically considers itself well above those "below" them. As you know those lower class recognize that as the natural oreder of things and much to my frustration accept it as their due.
Until I start stirring up trouble and get them to think...
I've known some strong ladies from the same background as your very lovely lady who did indeed rise above all tha bigotry and prejudice and acheived all they could hope for in their education. It can be done if she's strong and determined enough.
But I reckon you know that.

don't worry balls!
i do have the same fights with my main honey as i am trying to get her in to bangkok university. she used to study at rama uni but i convinced her it might be better at bangkok, rangsit or tamasart!
so i am considering buying her the way in there, as long as she passes the test. even if she is not from isaan but central thai and does have white skin she is a little bit scared of the other universities, same sort of feeling as mr. joe described. may be not as much as an isaan lady but certainly i little shy towards these other people, as she is also well aware that they do have a much different financial background than herself.
in a way i am not fully sure i am doing the right thing for her, pushing her out of ramkhamhaeng and into bangkok university as this doesn't help her if she does not want to do it for herself, but only because i tell her to! time will tell!
once again if she passes the tests at other universities and you are willing to buy her in there this might be a good option. be aware that the courses at universities such as bangkok or others easily run into something like thb 5,000 or more for a month, certainly a hell lot of money for an average thai person!

yeah, I think you've summarized the dilemna. I also have to be very careful not to project unrealistic expectations upon her, as she is very Thai in her thinking. The biggest frustration a Western thinking person like myself has is to see someone with a lot of potential that is not used -- ultimately, she will just do whatever she is comfortable with, lest it be too "mai sanuuk."
A few words of encouragement from you to her over coffee would probably have more impact than anything I might say right now. I think she really respects who you are and what you have done incountry over the many years. This is a subject that will become more real for her as the GED gets closer. Hmmm, maybe I play up the "you're not just a bar girl, you are the daughter of poo yai ban." Although I could just get an Isaan chortle from that approach.

Once again you've displayed your sensitivity and wisdom. Indeed a potential challenge for the erstwhile falang white knight is that the TG may not feel the need to "rise above" anything, and who are we to project our western (particularly US) notions of the imperative for upward mobility?
The Poo Yai Ban angle is a good idea and based on sound reasoning. I hope you know that I will certainly be happy to give her a deluxe MrJoe inspirational speech, and I'm flattered to think that she might give it some credence. Though I fear she may be somewhat intimidated by me (without cause but understandably) -- or is that just her shyness? No wories bro. I'll do what I can at your discretion. Though I would never be willing to unecessarily discomfort her at anyone's request, I know that you would not make such a request.

Thanks, and I'll get back on-thread after this one thought: when we met last time and I mentioned rather offhand that her Dad was poo yai ban, I didn't think much of it at the time, but I did recall you pulling me up short and telling me that is a big thing for her. Well, I thought a lot about what you said, and after I saw the dynamics in her village, I had to agree with you. This is Thailand, after all, and she is very proud of her dad, and his status in the ban now. But you are right, it is really a philosophical question as to what she might be "rising above" and for which she may see no relevance in this lifetime.

Your last post is what I'm talking about when I say you are wise on this issue. That you know that it is not necessarily productive or even benign to push her into something she herself does not truly want, is wise and it reflects well on your character IMO.
