Only International Driver's License obtained OUTSIDE Thailand are valid for Thailand. International licenses are normally not valid for the country in which they are issued. Get one before you come over. I get mine from my travel agent in Saudi.

Applied for an International Drivers License from a company in Phuket, they advertise in the Nation's. 6500 baht for a 20 year license. I've already mailed them the initial 1K baht fee, and they indicated it'll take 10-14 days to process. Last time I tried getting a Thai drivers license you required an International Drivers License, a Visa Stamp (not a tourist visa stamp) and a form from the embassy.

Got mine 18 mos ago, while I was still living there. Since it was a one-year type, and now expired, I thought I might try to renew it and get the five year... Unfortunately, I went to get the pictures and doctor's certificate before I went to Building 4 (Department of Land Transportation, Paholyothin Rd., BKK). The ladies at the first queue spoke NO English, and assumed I spoke NO Thai. They just kept saying "You go to embassy, no work permit, go to embassy..." Finally she handed me a piece of paper that listed a number of requirements, including unfortunately, a copy of your non-immigrant visa and EITHER a work permit, OR a certificate of residence from the embassy, in my case USA. Since I am here on a tourist visa now, I can not renew my licenses. Shit. IMPORTANT: here is the hot tip for pictures and doctor's certificate, one-stop, no muss, no fuss, no bother: On Paholyothin Road, just past (south of) the main driveway for the DLT, is a smaller road intersecting. Cross that road, and you will see a radiator repair shop on the corner, and the very next shop on your left is where all your problems are solved. The Thai-Chinese lady will send you to see the doctor in the back room. He well check to be sure you are upright and breathing, sign as many forms as you have licenses to renew, and send you on your way for 120 baht. Stop back at the desk if you need pics, four for 60 baht. In-and-out in 10 min. Go early, avoid the moto-taxi boys. hs

Thanks for the info. I've been here nearly 5 years and it's about time I got a license, but each time I've been stopped the police accepted my California license without a question.

I am with Thaiaficiando on this, I drove the entire time I worked in Phuket and was pulled over once and even had an accident and was never questioned with my American DL...not once.. Not even when I signed the contract for my rental car and I had insurance on it.... Well, that American DL cost me some bribe change from the man in brown though after my minor accident atl

A couple of years ago I thougt it would be "fun" to have a thai dl. So I started the process. I do have both a registered thai company and a non-immigrant B 1 yr visa. So I got the medical and went to the office and signed some paper. No problem so far - except that I needed a fix address in Thailand - which is something I have never had for over 30 years.... If I had been really wanting it I may have used GF address - but something in the back of my head told me that I should not. And at the end of the day I really did not need neither. I have had for ages an international drivers license which have worked perfectly so far when renting cars or "motocyc.." No discussion what so ever. So the thai DL is really for me just a thing to have for fun or an extra addition to a bunch of other cards in the wallet. The practical use of it is not needed --- as long as you have the intl license. To be really honest I dont really need that either since dear gf has a license of her own and can rent and drive whenever we need!

actually the main reason for wanting I thai license is not for driving in Thailand. When I am in america, if I get stopped I use the thai license. no points, no insurance impact, no reciprocal agreements
