I'm about to go & try to get a new one now, even though it's several month before mine expires. If they don't give me a new one I will file a police report that I lost the old one. Trouble is my current license was issued in f***in' Au Udorm, a long feckin' way from where I am sitting as I type this. Anyone had any luck with changing their issuing office ? The last time I had to move the issuing office it was done by my MNC employer & ironically enough I want to move it back now to the original office I had it issued from (my first one), which is almost walking distance from where I sit now. I also tried to get them to feckin' spell my name correctly in Thai on there, but they ask for a Change of Name registration. Well how the f*** can I get that when they are the ones who f***ed up the transliteration in the first place ? The main reason I want the new license is because now they are in English & have a barcode or a smart card chip in them. I could use that one abroad. MY, Khmer, & possibly even temporarily in my home country.

Quote: from lucky6666 on 4:14 pm on Dec. 22, 2008 actually the main reason for wanting I thai license is not for driving in Thailand. When I am in america, if I get stopped I use the thai license. no points, no insurance impact, no reciprocal agreements
As I have all non Im B, WP, and fixed adress in Thailand plus the driving license from my native country, can I go through the process and get some kind of International or thai DL that I'll be able to use back home (as my license has been cancelled following recurrent conflicts about my driving style and what authorities reckon reasonable ) ? How long does the process take ? And which lawyer or company may make it faster ( my lawyer would probably not manage it before my 1y visa expires...)

I got my 5yr licence a couple of months back (practically a 6yr one since it runs 5yrs from your next birthday). I was due a 5yr one back in 2007 but they would not give me one because I had quit my job in Bkk and did not have a WP. In 2007 I went to Sukhumvit office at first but this was a nightmare...treated like cattle and very time consuming. Went to Morchit and was sorted in less than an hour. Had to do all the tests but it was much more relaxed than Suk. In 2008 for no other reason than I wanted the 5yr licence I went and got a Business visa back in the UK. Went back to Morchit in March - they gave me the 5yr one inside 30mins. Just a photograph needed - no tests. Went straight to the next counter and got a Thai International Driving Licence. This took about 10mins. More expensive than the UK but a lot more convenient. If you want a Thai driving licence go to Morchit. They are more efficient, more polite and much more friendly than Sukhumvit.
