...Seems there's quite a few folks considering the flight from the USA. Fortunately, that is something which is an option in our times, though I'm not sure how wise it is.
For once I am agreeing with the iDuck here. If you do not have a reliable source of income taking off overseas can be risky.
It sort of reminds me of back in the 80's when kids would take off to SoCal (San Diego in particular) with the idea of earning money however they can and living on the beach. In most cases it did not work and the kids ended up in a homeless shelter until they gave up and went home.
As a foreigner overseas however you do not have the 'social safety-net' you have in the US. You need cash to be able to survive here.
As for atl's friend I do not believe it is the right time to blow your savings on a Thai sabbatical. Given the current state of the economy and the number of skilled workers leaving the financial industry it would be better to use your savings to supplement your unemployment insurance whilst you look for a new job.
atl, I would remind your friends that they can not collect unemployment unless they are actively seeking a job in the locality that they are collecting unemployment and going overseas for 6 months may affect their eligibility in the future.
Maybe they should collect their 3 - 6 months unemployment first and then take the trip  ...

They dont plan on collecting unemployment.....
and I dont know him very well but from what little I do know about his family gather he is a member of the "lucky sperm club" (bastard lol!)
I did get the impression that 25K was not a life savings figure but more or less what he and his GF had decided they could part with...I dont know who is putting up how much and my post about her having most of it is total speculation on my part.....
Since they both work in the same industry which is at a virtual standstill at the moment (and most predictions are that it will remain for at least another year) they both figured, "hell why not?"
I already pointed out to him what I see as a possible sticky situation, which is the GF part of the scenario.
Oh well, you only live once so go for it...is my thought process...
It does have the makings to be either a wonderful "escape" or, as DD pointed out, a total disaster

Likewise, it now appears there are predictions that real estate in Thailand will be similarly affected, which might be good news for buyers (i.e. pre-2004 prices may return).

Prices of property and farm products in Thailand are likely to decline as a result of the financial institutions crisis in the United States, according to a leading Bangkok academic.
Speaking at a seminar on "The Lehman Brothers Crisis: Impacts on Global Finance and Thailand," Somphop Manarangsan, a lecturer in Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Economics, said the financial institutions crisis in the US is projected to drag on for three to four years.
Consequently the Thai government should accelerate building domestic economic stability by ensuring the monetary and fiscal policies are implemented in a coordinated manner.
At the same time, property prices in Thailand are expected to drop in tandem with those in the US, which contracted by as much as 30-40 per cent.
He said the US investment bank Lehman Brothers, which went bankrupt, is set to sell off its property. The move will definitely affect property prices in Thailand, Dr Somphop said.
In addition, farm product prices are likely to fall and exports to slow down as a result of the US economic meltdown.
Somchai Chitsuchon, director of Thailand Development Research Institute's Economic Development and Income Distribution Division, said the government must speed up solving the financial institution crisis, which fuelled financial costs.
However, Dr Somchai said, Thailand has yet needed to inject significant amounts of money into the system since the capital outflows occurred only in the stock market. (TNA)
