From what other expats have told me and I have no idea if it's true that you cannot get one out of Cambodia. S'pore and Penang are good to go from what I was told. Check www.thaivisa.com

You need to have a Non Immigrant B before applying for a work permit.

The routine is like this:

- Look for a job
- If you have found one, the soon-to-be-employer have to make a recommendation/request letter to the Embassy in the style of 'Please provide Mr. X with a non immigrant visa because we would like to employ him and apply for a work permit' + copies of all credentials of the soon-to-be employer (Vat reg., company registration).
- Go to an embassy (Penang will do) and apply for a single or multi-entry non immigrant B
- Let your employer apply for a work permit.
- After your wp has been issued... start working

If you don't have a work permit or have no proof that it has been applied for, the embassy will likely refuse a second non immigrant B.

More info: http://www.mfa.go.th/web/12.php#non

Good luck!

Well correct me if I am wrong but you dont need to wait for the Work Permit to start working. getting it can take some time so most of the people start working as soon as they start the application for the WP.

Cheers,

Seth

No, you're not allowed to work without a work permit. The idea of a work permit is that the authorities can decide if you're allowed to work (not in a restricted field) and if the company is allowed to hire you (quota thai-foreigners).

Actually, application for a WP doesn't take a long time. Mine was done in 1.5 hours. You have to go to the One Stop Service at Ratchada and the company hiring you should be recognized by the BOI and have a registered capital of min. 30-35 million baht.

What would be the use of applying for a work permit if you're already working (and have a contract with your employer) ?

Excerpt from http://www.thaivisa.com/288.0.html

'All aliens engaged in any kind of work in Thailand must hold a valid work permit, issued principally by the Department of Employment of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare pursuant to the Alien Employment Act B.E. 2521 (A.D. 1978).

The term "work" is defined very broadly, covering both physical and mental activities, whether or not for wages or other remuneration. Working without a valid work permit even for a day is a criminal offense. '

Do your homework before posting as it might confuse other members....

Off the top of my head, this figure is not correct -at least was not about 1 year ago. More like 4 million. But.... would not put my balls in an anvil for this. i.e. I am not sure.

Smegs it is a good thing your balls are not in a vise or on an anvil, because the 35>40 THB figure is correct now for the using the one stop service. For us peasants, the process is about 1 to 2 months. This may be sped up for under the table expedite fee.

Dr. Love is also correct in stating you CANNOT Work until you have a permit, hence the name Work Permit.

No slight made towards Singlolo, just a smart ass remark at his expense.

Now Danger Mouse, the first thing they check is whether you can spell Non-Immigrant B VISA correctly, since you spelled it None Immigrant VISA you get None. Sorry Dude.
