Just wondering if anybody has shipped their car from the USA to Thailand? Shipment costs and taxes prohibitive? Left hand drive problems? Cars seem so expensive here that I was curious if this was a viable option.

Don't even think about it. The import duties can run into several times the cost of the car.

There are some sites by the Thai government covering this but I am too lazy to look them up. If I get energetic, I'll post the sites.

ps: f*** it, I had a burst of energy so did the work for you.

Google provided me this information for your future guidance.

For me, it is non-sense to import such cars coz of transport + Duty import rates, which are based on the engine size and American cars have big engines. And you steering wheel will be on the wrong side anyway, which can become annoying, especially at car park and expressway.
If you go for Japanese cars, they are not so expensive actually and you don't lose much when seeling them back.

I don't know if this was definitely true but I ran into a guy who shipped a Mazda MX5 from Australia. He paid the massive import duties anyway, he drove it to a convertable exhibition in Bangkok and was offered 50% more for it than the total costs of the car and to get it to and into Bangkok.

Thanks to all for the input. I thought there would be high import duties but I didn't think they would be as high as that. Damn, I have a killer jeep TJ and 525i that are going to sit in storage. Both would have made my stay in LOS much better.

How long are you planning on staying?

Consider the following factors:
-What is the depreciation rate of your vehicles?
-What is the cost of storage? Obviously you won't want to leave your favorites sitting in the sun and rain, waiting for a break-in. So a locked room is a must. A big room. Two of them.
-A vehicle sitting unused will develop mechanical problems. Rubber seals degrading comes to mind. Oil draining out of the engine, etc.

This leads to a far different question - importing specialized cars (i.e. classics) to Thailand for profit.

Given all the import taxes, it seems certain cars still go for a premium.

Is this being done?

I had a friend that tried to import a 20-25 year old London taxicab.

After some 6-8 months with the car sitting at the port in Laem Chabang, he got it out with the unofficial payment of 100,000 baht.

I have another friend that drove a car in from Malayasia. It was entered on his passport and he could not leave the country unless he drove the car out with him or paid the import duties and got it removed from his passport.

I think he finally shipped the car back to Europe and forgot about it. He bought himself a motorcycle.

THIS IS NOT SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO.

Ok Fellas, I am posting in this thread so as not to start a new one as this is somewhat related. I am planning to move to Bangkok and am hoping to stay. I was considering bringing my BMW motorcycle. I sure don't want to sell it. How is the import tax calculated on used bikes. I don't want my Harley there. BTW I will start another Thread as I am going to stay as long as I can with part time teaching and my pension from the military.
