I made all of the required searches on this forum, and have read other posts, but need to ask for anyone's experiences/help with the following specific query. If I've missed where this is covered elsewhere apologies in advance and would appreciate the heads up on where I can find such info:

I booked my flight in the UK and being flexible with dates left the detail to a travel agent advising that I wanted to spend 2 months in BKK on a 60 day tourist visa. Paperwork was processed and TA even advised that the best he could do was a 58 day stay, which was fine. It turns out, however, that my flights have been booked on a 61 day schedule (TA messed up) and my question is - should I renew my visa through usual channels for an extra 30 days (even though only 1 extra day is required) or do I take the chance that my low profile will not be noticed before tendering my passport at the airport with an out of date visa? If the advice is to run with the latter what reception am I likely to receive at the airport and are there any time consuming formalities to undertake if a tourist visa is out of date?

Thanks for any help and for the avoidance of confusion I am aware of the "1 extra day for free then a 200Baht fine for every extra day for the expired visa" but need to know how this works in practise.

I'm sure other members have better info or suggestions, I've read a few posts on this subject already.

But, as it turns out, I just today got back from the immigration office so here's my story. I went to extend my "transit visa", the one that I got when I arrived here that gives me 30 days in LOS. I needed to extend it by about 20 days and had two options, leave the country and come back or get an extension. I only checked one place for the cost of the bus to Cambodia and they quoted me 2300 baht for a 12-13 hour day of taking the bus. I'm sure you can do this less expensively but I didn't really want to do this anyway so didn't put in the legwork to find a cheaper option. So I went to the immigration office and filled out the forms. Cost is 1900 baht and they only grant you a 10 day extension, even when you ask. I was able to get 20 days but I had a medical certificate due to an eye injury but even getting that was a little bit of a hassle. For example, I was referred to the vaccination department to plead my case then they sent me across the street to make photocopies for them, etc. I find that highly amusing in a way since I saw many people running across the street for their 2 baht document copies. Then they could only give me 15 days but I can get 5 extra days if I go back. Plus, why is it that it costs the same price for the 10 days extension (ie. doing the right thing) and the 200 baht a day fine for not doing it? Who knows. I gathered that you can get the extension for all kinds of visas but the general rule appears to be 1900 baht for 10 days. Personally, I'd rather not risk keeping a low profile and preferred to pony up the cash.

The immigration office is near Sathorn road on Soi Suan Plu.

Cheers, Hank

i would say dont do the overstay200b its all loged on computer now,do to many overstays and they ban u from new visas,,if u find youself near a border ie udon thani etc after your first 30 days are up on your 58 day one, just go to loas for a day and a night (lao visa 1,500b or pay in $) same as the renew in bkk and stockup on cigarets (140b for 200) and booze in the day market in vientian, and u get a free 30day visa when u get back to thailand,or just renew in bkk up to u...

I overstayed 3 days once, no probs at the airport just payed.

Also I have done the 2 week extension twice as per hankchinaski's post, it's pretty easy to do but does take a couple of hours.

It is very unlikely that you would have problems if you just overstayed for a day but it is technically a risk so if you are going to worry or intend to be in some of the places that have been raided by the police - such as Qbar on thoses couple of days out of your visa I would get the extension.

I've overstayed by one day, thinking it was 30 days net, and not realizing arrival and departure days are both counted (eventhough I arrived just before midnight and departed at 7 AM).

There's a one day grace period on overstays, so I didn't need to pay the 200 baht fee. The immigration officer called his supervisor over, who initialed my passport, and they may have put an additional stamp in it, but I'm not sure. They didn't say anything about it to me.

Just to add one note that the office is open until 4:30 pm (and 12:30 or 12:00 on Saturdays). I arrived at about 3:40 and was out by 4:15 despite all the running back and forth. Might be a strategy to go late in the day, but I might just have gotten lucky. Imagine that, getting lucky in LOS. Who'd a thunk it? lol

This, as so many other newbie threads, has been discussed before.

Just overstay a day. Costs you a maximum of 200 baht (perhaps even free as the first day is not counted). No need for extensions or trips to the immigration office.

Don't be so afraid.

It might be that the official at UK airport refuses you to let you aboard (as airlines are responsible for the passengers they bring) m but you can just tell them you will make a trip abroad in the 60 days period.

I've did the overstay twice since 2002. First time was 7 days over and the second time just happened this past April (15 days over). Neither time was intentional. Just paid the fine. In between these overstays, I've been back 7 times in between, so no worries.

racingsteve,

a day or 2 overstay is probably worth the "risk." I overstayed by 2 days by accident last year (was reading the wrong stamp in my passport, pretty stupid, eh? Maybe viagra induced vision blurring, lol!).

They discovered the overstay problem when I was going into Laos via the Nong Khai checkpoint. No problem, just asked me politely into the office, where I figured out what I'd done, lol, then paid the 200 Baht fine, and got the exit stamps no problem.

I wouldn't recommend any more than that, as a matter of practice. There's an interesting blurb about overstay problems on thaivisa.com. Can get very inconvenient if they nab you off the street and drag you off to the holding facillity.

HankChinaski,

2300 for a bus to Poitpet and back is very high. Did that include all visa fees too? You can get the VIP bus from the MoChit (Northern) terminal all day long, just go in and ask at the info window to have them point you to the right ticket window. Cost is only a couple hundred Baht in each direction. About a 4.5 hour ride each way.

Also, at Aranya Prathet, the Aran Mermaid hotel (about a 4 star hotel) is right next to the bus terminal, and is only about 700 to 800 Baht a night (if you ask for the corporate rate, I know others have gotten it cheaper than that, though the rack rate is supposedly 1000 baht). And the motocy's to the border for the turnaround stamp are about 30 to 40 Baht each way. The motocy stand is right next to the bus station too, so all pretty seamless to do.
