I'm currently restructuring my department (marketing in a big law firm) and I'm going to be doing some hiring over the next month or so.
I'll be looking for three roles. Two are mid-level Marketing / Business Development roles the right candidates will need half decent english, a basic understanding of the Thai business community, a half-decent writing style and good common sense. They'll likely be university educated and will have worked in office environment for at least a couple of years. If they've worked in a professional services or law firm environment, fantastic. Both roles will pay in the 50,000 - 60,000 a month range.
I'm also looking for a secretary who can double as a help on various marketing projects. She'll need to be well-presented, hands-on (no sniggering please), motivated and with a sense of humour. A university grad or someone bright with an interest in Marketing and the Asia Pacific region would be idea. She needs to know her way around the Microsoft Office packages also. I guess salary will be in the 20-25,000 range.
A couple of questions.
Do such people exist in Bangkok? and
Are my salary levels reflective of market realities? Too high, or too low?

IMHO Your PA is about right. You should get a good one for that. Your Marketing/Bus. Dev. is a bit high. I would have thought 40K was plenty.
BTW I am looking for somebody to design and develop a web site. Very high end High Fashion Ladies wear, International market. Site needs to be accessable in English, Chinese, Japanese and French. Anybody out there interested please pm me. I will need to see examples of stuff you have already done (and permission to verify that).

Scobie, your post is full of contradictions that it is hard to know what you are looking for....??? I think you first question reflects that. Are you looking for thai or farang. The wage level says thai, but then you go on to say:
They have to have "basic understanding of thai business community"..."half-decent writing style"...
Then you say they would "likely be" university educated (re writing style)....and worked in "professional services or law office" (basic understanding of thai business).
Of course my favourite is "and good common sense." (so you are looking for a farang!?!?!).
From my very limited exposure to thai/farang businesses (so therefore IMHO) - top of your list should be the "good common sense" and a commitment to the job who has initiative - everything else can be picked up without to much drama (within reason).
Ftumch says 50 - 60k is too much, 40k is better. I always give great weight to the statement "You pay someone to stop them looking for another job paying more". So pay them a little over standard. You only get what you pay for.
Nothing worse for a business than high staff turnover....In private business it can be as much about developing relationships with your client (NO not in the tbg sense) as selling your product/services.

I dont say Thai or Farang on purpose Isee. I don't care if they are martian, so long as they do the job. And I'm surprised you suggest the salary levels are for Thai only after the discussions you and I had in the past about your own opportunity.
They are local hires yes (as in, i'm not looking overseas), but they will be paid local rates, or slightly above to get the right quality.

The real reason that I posted was that I had a chuckle at obviously a thai wage (aka thai worker) with the need for "good common sense". The chuckle wasn't directed at you, but it brought a flood of "thai logic" instances to mind. I'm sure given the opportunity we all could recall "thai logic" at its best.
I knocked back an offer of 60k (which I first thought I could "get by on") and would have accepted 90k (to start on - MASSIVE decrease compared to my current income - but I was prepared to sacrifice somethings) which kinda did and didn't happen.... In fact, had I known that they were going to start neg at 40k (aka minimum wage; and re: "you get what you pay for"), I wouldn't have bothered to apply.
I would be curious to know what your "bottom line" would have been if your employer started talking about local wage and 40k a month....
While it would be nice to work in LOS (more than just the p4p), LOS is no fun when you are broke. Why live in a country where you can't afford to enjoy it?? Better off maintaining ones standard of living and go wild on holidays.
The rest of my post was just general thoughts about contrasting "How cheap can I get somebody to work for me" as opposed to "what value will this (long term) employee add and what is that worth to me as the employer". Once again, general thoughts - nothing directed personally at you.

Yes they are Ballonchasers, they ride around in the afternoon looking for bars that are stringing up ballons, knowing it is some happless Girl or sponsers birthday, they can eat for nights in a row if they are lucky.
I have even seen them writing the address down in notebooks, the very same notebooks they keep the sailors numbers in.
