i have read about occasionial passport checks and if your unlucky enough to get caught in a bar raid you will be asked to show your passport should you have it with you every time you out? is it true if the boys in brown ask for it and (you no have) it's off to the Crowbar Inn? is a photocopy acceptable?

I carry a "copy" of my PP along with the visa page (ask for a copy at check-in). I also carry a few business cards from the hotel of where I am staying. Got snagged one time w/o PP and talked my way thru the piss test and PP thing. The men in brown are not really hard to deal with, you just gotta know your limits.. LS

Your chances of getting your passport lost or stolen are far greater then you ever needing it to get yourself out of some jam.

If I was concerned about every possible thing that could happen to me, I would be walking around with a backpack of stuff. Preferably a med kit for the high chance of getting hit by a Motorbike or Car.

Keep it in your hotel safe till you leave

Carry a copy including the visa stamp page. That will suffice. Some places (CM2, QBar) won't let you in without it anyway.

I was involved in a car accident a few weeks ago in Chachoengsao (80 km east of bkk). I was only a passenger, Thai GF was driving her car. I had the mentioned copies of passport and visa pages. The local police were most upset I dod not have the passport itself and kept the copies. I had to return after I got out of the hospital and bring them the orginal. All they did was to have my GF make copies of the same pages they already had.

Yes they make it up as they go along mate. The law is what a Thai copper says it is. Like the time those folk got carted off from QBar even though they had copies. TIT.

No, the law says 'carry your passport at all times'. You may often get away with a copy, but that's up to the generosity of an individual.

I was checked in a gogo a year ago. Only thing they did was look at my copy, write down my passport number, and ask where I was staying. He didn't even care about the visa stamp, just the number, and my hotel. After piss testing about 6 of the BGs, the whole group left.

It is perfectly reasonable to ask for the original. Anyone with a basic knowledge of Photoshop can alter a copy. As long as they did not throw you in jail or detain you for not carrying the original, then I don't see the problem.

My missus (Thai ) says its acceptable to tell them its in the hotel, do they want to come and see it. I dont carry mine around at night I get drunk, I will loose it, I have a passport with a visa in it so have nothing to fear apart from a fine right.
i'll take the risk, I gave up using soft drugs years back, so im not that bothered about piss tests either.
Do whatever you feel right about, I never take bank, credit cards or passports out on the piss.

you can get a fine like everywhere else (which could end up in their pockets ), how much is a new passport. most places in the world police only check passports in areas where they have a problem i.e where drugs are used or sold, better to stay away from such places and minimise chances of getting checked.

Im not naief far from it just on holiday and want to enjoy it without worrying about this and that f*** that can stay at home and get that.

if you make a copy probably no fine either, leave passport at hotel risk pay money so big boo hoo deal.

I had my passport checked once,at the bus station bkk ~pattaya years back they (boys in brown ) wanted to look in my bag (when they conveniently will put Jaba or whatever inside so you can pay for their kids education or their minor wife ) the wife was their and told them to piss off big smiles and sorry sir bla bla bla.
they looked at my passport which was ok, but one was looking for some extra cash so even if you have it watch out watch your back thats all and enjoy.
