Gentlemen/Ladies (?),

If you haven't seen this yet, you had better read it:

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=140252

The upshot is that spouses/children of men on retirement visas will no longer be eligible for extension stays as dependents. They will EACH have to qualify for their own, separate visa, i.e., THB800,000 in the bank for the wife (or 65K income), and, most likely, ED visas for the kiddies, in addition to the qualifiers for the man.

Thailand's current government wants us out.

There are still many ways we single guys can stay, but my heart goes out to the retirees that (it turns out) were stupid enough to believe that Thailand was farang/retiree friendly. They couldn't give a shit less...

Note, too, that this is effective immediately, today, 1 Sept. 2007. Really pretty third-worldish, not surprisingly.

So, if I get this right:

- retired couples, with a 'positive' family-style lifestyle, wanting to live in peace, and having a nice retirement, while bringing $$$ into Thailand are now persona-non-grata (well, unless they pony up a LOT more $$$).

- single mongers, who will continue to perpetuate the 'Whorehouse to the World' image that Thailand has, will be able to stay, sneak by, and flout their goods.

- thailand's the country complaining about the negative image they hold in the world ("Whorehouse to the world"), and stressing the more 'conservative' and 'positive' farang they aim to attract?

Laugh Out Loud amusing.

This is just another reason to underline my argument why I'm not rushing to move to Thailand, but why it is a GREAT destination for vacations and R&R.

Good Times.

Agreed. Reminds me of that old saying, "It just gets stupider and stupider!" I'll make my money in the West and spend it in LOS, but I have never considered LOS an investment. Anything I might "buy" there, especially via my Thai fiancee, has always been and always will be considered a walkaway. It is ironic though, as Daffy has pointed out, that us mongers are not frozen out (yet) by this latest development. "When they came for me..."

The government wants the money we generate. They DON'T WANT the farang that goes along with it.

I am in something of a box. Not about this latest idiotic ruling as my wife and child are both thai citizens so we are not affected. The box I am in is that I have two homes all paid for and have somewhat established myself in LOS. I really don't feel I can live out my golden years any place other than Thailand.

I have, however, told both my wife and my daughter that if it were not for them, I would never grace the doors of that grand boondoggle called Bangkok Airport.

This attitude toward farangs extends all the way down to the lowest bureaucrat and most of the business dealings we happen to be burdened with. This is not a fun place to live any longer.

I hope it will never happen, but I don't think this is the end of the petty, knee-jerk crap they will come up with.

As Balls said, "When they came for me..."

All those smug bastards over on Thaivisa are conspicuously quiet, with their "Quit whining, just get legal", holier-than-thou condescension...

They are waiting their turn. Even the very vocal gay moderator, PeaceBlondie is packing his knickers, and those of his 'partner', and heading for Mexico.

We haven't heard the last of this, I fear...

Personally, I have been feeling the heat for a while, and coupled with the lack of a job right now, I am headed back to the Land of the Big Corporation at the end of the month. I had hoped to get a few things back on track, maybe bank some $, return to Isaan, and live out my golden years w/Spongetta, but, now, it's tenuous at best.

Cool it, gentlemen.

Simply supply and demand: the Thai government realises that there is a large demand from farang, and they are only pushing up the price (of settling here).

I don't think they should apologise for that.

Here's an idea: go tell a retired couple, who are about to try to renew their retirement/dependent visa, and who have bought a condo, moved their lives here, to 'cool it'.

Better clean your reading glasses, Saturday Boy. This Police Order is effective today, and there is no grandfather clause.

No one is arguing that the Thais can't do whatever they please, but these folks came here, followed the procedure, jumped through the hoops, and are now having the rug pulled from under them.

So, you are either one of the smug ones, who have your own visa sorted, for the time being, or you don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Get it?

And then there's the 'it will all blow over' crowd.

Nevermind that someone's life savings may expire while they are dodging the current calamity.

It will all just blow over.

Well, I don't think so. The recent changes in the visa exemption (90 out of 180) rules are unprecedented, as are the investment-killing Foreign Business Act drafts. This is NOT a little blip, guys. This is just the beginning.

Of course, I can understand how many here couldn't care less, because as long as they spend money on their short vacations, Thailand is going to welcome them with open wallets. Fair enough. But there are some of us who live here, full time, and we have already had to deal with the first changes.

I can see a future, where the cost of staying here is so prohibitive, that no one will want to. A few weeks of R&R is going to have to suffice. Spend your money, and don't let the door hit you where the soi dog bit you.

Anyway, not much anyone can do about it, but it sure is annoying to read posts like the previous two.

I just returned to Saudi after three weeks in LOS and made this observation that sort of relates to how the Thai government appears to feel about farangs.

When I arrived, we were whisked through Immigration, baggage claim and customs to the nearest foreign exchange. I was first in line to get my passport stamped and I was looking for my taxi in 15 minutes.

When I left three weeks later, I stood in line for over one hour just to get stamped out and then a very disinterested immigration official did the deed.

The attitude seems to me to be.....thank you for spending all your money. Don't let the door hit your broke ass on the way out.
