With an US passport, can I land in Bangkok and get a 30-day stay stamp and then go to Penang or Singapore to get a 60-day visa?

Also, I am trying to apply for a 60-day visa from the USA, but the visa application is asking me for a proposed address in Thailand and the name and address of a reference person in Thailand.

Obviously I don't have these information.

I can book a hotel for a few days and give the hotel address but I still cannot provide a local person reference.

What should I do?

I have a round trip ticket from April 8-October 1

What is the most economical and the best way for me to stay in Thailand for the above time period?

I can make a few trips to Singapore/Honk Kong/Macau/Penang/Kuala Lampur etc. But I would rather prefer not to make the trip every month.

Any suggestions?

Not the most economical, but still not too expensive is the student visa. Check out Walen school and find out if this suits your needs (I am not talking about a university type school; rather, one that allows you to take Thai language lessons and qualifies for the student visa). I hear they even allow you to take their classes via Skype for those that live upcountry and not near one of their schools. Not sure if this is a multi entry or if you are allowed to stay in Thailand the whole time, but the schools that offer this should be able to answer these questions

I got a 60 day visa from the DC embassy on my last trip out. I didn't have a reference person either and they did not mind. I just had to show my roundtrip ticket, hotel reservation, and bank account info. I happened to have all my hotel reservations in advance, but I don't think its necessary. It took them a whole 3 minutes to approve me. I'd recommend calling them if you want to be absolutely sure.

The requirements for a visa may vary by Consulate/Embassy in the USA.

I get 60-day tourist visas at the Los Angeles Consulate. I've never had to show plane tickets, hotel reservations, or bank account information. And, their web site (different site for each Consulate/Embassy) does not ask for this information from a US citizen. I just fill out the form.

However, I do have a local reference. I usually give the address of the hotel I am initially staying at. Never been questioned.

Onera, since your plane tickets suggest a stay longer than 30-days you MIGHT have problems at immigration getting a 30 day stamp. I've noticed in the last couple of trips that if you have a tourist visa they haven't asked for plane tickets - but if you are getting the 30 day stamp they occasionally have.

PS - maybe BK is a good local reference? 5555 Or another "living the dream" member?

Oh, and perhaps the most economical is to get a THREE entry tourist visa (for free for a bit longer). A BTF member just got this at the Los Angeles Consulate. I don't know if the other Consulates offer them, and I have never heard of a THREE entry Tourist Visa. But, he got it. I usually get a TWO entry Tourist Visa.

As RIT pointed out, that is exactly what I got, a tourist visa with 3 entry stamps (write in 3 in the tourist visa box in the upper right hand corner of the application). You have until the end of March to get them for free, so you better get your application, passport, and 2 passport photos, plus a stamped (with stamps, not a metered sticker) return envelope sent to the LA Consulate.

If you use priority mail for both the envelopes you'll get your passport, and visa back in about 2 weeks (you can save a few days extra by using next day mail too). Also use a delivery confirmation sticker so you know the Consolute got your passport. No need for one on the return envelope, just make sure you get your address right....hehehe.

The visa is good for 180 days from the time it was issued, not when you land in Thailand, but you'll be ok for how long it is good for. You'll miss 9 months by just a few weeks if you time it to use your last stamp on the 179th day. If you run out of visa, you can just fly out of the country, and back for another 30 day exemption stamp. If you do a land crossing you will only get 15 days so be aware of this.

You get 60 days with each stamp, and then a 30 day extention costing bt1900 from immigration to make it 90 days before you have to leave the country by any route, come back in, and do it again. The 15 days only applies after you run out of tourist visa stamps.

I always list my hotel location as the Manhattan Hotel on Sukhumvit soi 15, and have never had it checked. I have stayed there quite a bit in the past, but never in the last 6 years, and they have never checked.

With 3 entry stamps they won't worry about you staying that long. Your tourist visa stamps with extentions have you covered.

Now get your passport, and application sent off, you're running out of time.

If you are looking for a very cheap nice apartment, centrally located for your stay just msg me. At bt7000 a month for a 32sqm studio with everything you would want, including a nice pool, it is a bargain, and close to the BTS, or just a bt57 taxi ride from Soi Cowboy (it costs me between bt55, and bt61 for a taxi, with it mostly costing bt57 to get home). Water is extra, as is electric at bt6 a unit. This is pretty standard for regular long term apartment rentals. There are bigger apartments for more money, but the studio is a good bargain, and it's girl friendly.

It should be noted that you have to use your "local" consulate or the embassy when applying for a visa in the USA.

The Royal Thai Consulate General in Los Angeles has consular jurisdiction in California, Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

The Chicago Consulate has jurisdiction in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The New York Consulate has jurisdiction in New York, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pensylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Connecticut.

I assume that the Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. can handle visas from anywhere in the USA (but am not sure because I never used them).
