- Totally agree with you regarding the hotel situations here. Overpriced 90% of the time, and the cash pre-pay thing drives me nuts. It's kind of amusing that most of your points can be applied to Thailand as well if you look at them again.. i.e. "20-so families (and extended circle of cronies) who control the whole of this country, bribing, stealing, cheating"

You're right, situation is much the same in most countries in the region, with few families controlling economy and politics. The difference with the Philippines though is that, even with +7% annual GDP growth, poverty is still increasing every day in this country (see latest figures on this reported in FT today). Which literally means that those families are in fact sucking out "more" and faster than is actually generated by the whole country!!!
Even more interesting thing is that, along with Afganistan (!!!), Philippines is the ONLY country in all of Asia that has seen a steady decline in living standards and increased poverty since the early 1960s! I mean, the kleptocratic 20-families are REALLY grabbing e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g in this country, leaving not even breadcrumbs for the 85M Filipinos getting poorer every day that passes. Marcos started a trend which was proudly picked up by his successors, who have demonstrated incredible skill and success in further pronouncing that "trend".
It really is a shame and a total disaster.

Wagie, your post (three above this one, on the bottom of page 9) hit the nail on the head and is totally correct!! I believe the situation in that country is hopeless. Most of Manila and AC (and everywhere, for that matter) is a shithole, and the country smells of hopelessness.
That said, you can find some gems in this land of rubble and shit. If you keep your wits about you, don't make any trouble, and be careful of what you eat, you can have a good time for a few days. Out of main areas, there is some great diving and cheap beer, and pussy is everywhere so all is not so bad.

Again, very right. Problem is when one's nose is non-stop too close to the trough (or the toilet bowl, or the drain overflowing with raw sewage), it's difficult to smell the rose...
And that's exactly why a bit of R&R once in a while in BKK, despite all its darker sides, is so "refreshing"! I also spent quite a bit of time in BKK (and elsewhere in Thailand) and never (ever!) reached the level of disillusionment that has dawned on me here - I always managed to find and was always able to smell the elusive rose.

I’m thinking of going to Angeles City for 10 days to avoid Songkran in Pattaya. Can members recommend a hotel for up to 2,000 baht equivalent/night which is girl friendly and near the p4p area.
I’ve never been to the Philippines. Has AC got go go bars and soapies of Thai standard ? How do Philippina girls attitude & price compare to Thailand.

I admit I am too lazy to go back and search through this thread for its gems, but I seem to think I already have, and not remembering any clear cut description of Angeles, I figured it might be okay to solicit a few now.
What is the charm, the attraction of Angeles? Perhaps especially as compared to Manila. Is it the Pattaya to BKK? Or Phuket? (As you may know, I think Phuket is Disneyland, meaning for tourists only.)
I don't think it is any of those. But I am still not sure I understand what the particular attraction is. Please explain if you can.

Pattaya on steroids, or perhaps a Devils eye view of Pattaya? Certainly not for the faint hearted, its cheap & cheerful.
You usually pay Barfine & Girls fee at the Bar (about a third Manila prices) with only a small tip given to the Girl. Many punters take two Girls. Truthfully I had trouble finding one some nights. Many Cherry Girls make selection painful. Plenty of Bar Parties & Flippers are good fun people. BUT the best girls are smart enough to get themselves to Manila or further afield!
