Kink,

Again in this respect, Manila is not BKK. In my limited experience of MNL hotels, they tend to be overpriced. I've stayed mostly in hotels in the US$100+ range in MNL and they barely compare to the BKK US$60 range (dont want to list here the water-leakage-and-lord-knows-what-else stained walls, torn curtains and sheets, screaming pipes, raw sewage smelling rooms, etc)...

Have no idea what would be a decent place in the low//mid-range category.

To list a few, I've stayed at Holiday Inn Ortigas, Pan Pacific Malate, Somerset Millenium Makati, Discovery Suites. Pan Pacific was probably the best, in the US$ 150 range though, and it's close to LA Cafe.

Sorry I can't be of more/better help.

I don't think you should bother taking a taxi from Hyatt in Malate to LA Cafe. It's about two blocks from the hotel on Del Pillar St. Some people can't handle the sight of the poor and the poverty is obvious in that area and in most of Manila. People are sleeping on the streets there and the beggars sometimes grab your arm asking for change, but it's the way it is. If you have been around before, and I mean southeast Asia, you should be able to handle it and take the experience. You'll need a taxi to get to either Burgos or EDSA.

I am not sure what the deal is on Malate, Ermita, Makati. To me they are different districts in Manila, so don't think that they are actual different cities like we do in most respects. By the way, at the Hyatt, you are within like 3 blocks of Robinson's Mall which is pretty big. You'll have to walk through some beggars, but it's not bad.

Stayed at this fairly cheap place, called "Pearl Garden". It's diagonally opposite the Pan Pacific. Just about 5 minutes walk to L.A. Cafe. Got it for about 3,000 P/night. Free Wi-fi and breakfast for 2.

Very girl friendly, no problem bringing in 2 girls. And they even call you after the girl has left to make sure that everything is in order.

I stayed at both Pan Pacific and Pearl Garden. Although Pan Pacific is a great hotel, it is around $140 and on asiatravel, you can get Pearl Garden for $54 which in my opinion is a much better value. All the rooms have been remodeled and there are plasma TV's in each room although the least expensive ones are kind of small.
