I'm a US citizen who's been to both Hong Kong and Macau and a passport only was required. You can easily verify this by googling your query.
All the above info is correct excepting that Macau is more interesting actually. Oh wait, you're bringing your TGF? Nevermind, HK is more interesting, best to check out Macau solo to take full advantage of the place.

It's a very long thread but basically no more visa on arrival and no more one year multiple entry (max is two entries it seems, for shorter period) from chinese embassy in HKG.
And it seems chinese embassies only issue 1 entry in some countries. Everybody hope the situation will get back to normal after the olympics but so far it doesn't look good. I have a 1year multiple entry also, valid until December, but as my passport will be out of pages within 2 months I don't think I'll be doing much travel to China in the next few months.
Thi doesn't affect HK and macau though, still mostly no visa needed there

I think you should stay in Macau and do a day trip or overnight to Hong Kong.
I love both of these places, but the whole Macau thing is just wonderful. The old crap, the museums, the cool looking buildings, everything. On my last trip I went with a friend and we did 3 days 4 nights in Macau, and on one of those days did a side trip over to Hong Kong. And besides banging whores there was plenty to do and see in Macau. Sure there is lots in Hong Kong, but then you're going with a chick and its going to become some shopping expedition. Macau, one department store, and its easily avoided.
Besides banging whores, I really enjoy going down to the island of Colaone and hiking around. There are nice paths in the hills, and everything is on a small scale. When you finish you can go to Coloane Village and have egg tarts.
Walking around the peninsular part of Macau is also nice. Its just so small that you can go across the entire city in half hour. And speaking of half hours, if you can make room for a few there are lots of wonderful Chinese chicks that you can bang for 200-300MOP, and if you can somehow ditch your lady friend for several hours, the massage parlors are amazing.

interesting post BOB 5- I went to HK a dozen years ago with my then old lady- first day we went and took the star ferry to peak------ said i, this is the greatest place ive ever been--
BUT THAT WAS IT- we went to some garden really meant for kids- and I cant remember anything else as even being interesting- 3 days following were wasted as she wasnt a shopper- to me Beijing and Shanghai were 100% better -
I still might be crazy- and my Fodors may have left out the good stuff-but there are tall buildings in New York- ( I remember them tearing down a beautiful old Hilton hotel of 20 stories- so they could build a shit looking 50 story modern one-) --- You make Macao sound good- and as I said before- I know TGF will wet her pants if Venetian hotel is anything like Vegas- Ubon Ratchathani just doesnt have a hotel like it-( for some reason  ---- and the massage parlors- ill find a way regards

I do know that using UA miles within SE Asia is 20K for economy. Travel would be on their Star Alliance partner Thai Airways.

Came across this thread when doing a bit of research on taking my TGF to Hong Kong. As it is, she does not require a visa for this and can get a shore pass on arrival in Hong Kong. I have read some reports recently on the HK immigration people sending back Thai ladies. Could somebody tell me if there is any such risk? and how to make sure that she is able to enter Hong Kong with me? Thanks.

Took my girl to Hong Kong and Macao last February no problem at all. Second thought I think they requested to see her return ticket. She showed her return ticket no problem.
