It won't surprise me if they get paid by the blow...
Sometimes there are a large number of girls (15+), sometimes only a few (3-4).
That indicates that they can come and go as they please... no salary.
Please probably a commission on the drinks.

Sirtitus is right. The girls at SOL get no salary but they cannot come and go as they please, as tourists and visitors and seasoned tour guides know full well.
If they do not turn up for a day, they are bar-fined 400 baht.
Even though the customer still pays a bar-fine of 400 baht on a Sunday or a holiday, if the girl doesn't turn up on one of those days the bar-fine for her is 2000 baht.
If she is late for work, she is fined. There are other penalties.
It may be that when you find that there are only four or five girls there, it will be the morning time before all of the girls need to turn up for work. The bar opens up every morning of the week between 8 and 8 :30 and they are ready to blow by 9 or 9:30 a.m.
If it is the evening, and the full compliment of 20 + girls are not around, it merely indicates that the bar is quietly popular and that most of the girls are bar-fined and busy.
It is quite telling that another bj bar has just opened very near to where to the Star of Light bar is situated, in an attempt to syphon off ( dare I say suck ? ) some of the trade.
A great compliment to SOL and an even greater accolade to the girls at the Star of Light for their expert skills, their genuine warmth and welcome and their obvious charm at attracting repeat customers year after year who would never dream of going to Sukhumvit.
But, to my mind the Star of Light is unique in many ways not least of which is its method of working inside the bar. And you cannot find this easily in any other bar. Customers who fequent the Star of Light, would have no time drawing or pulling or hiding behind curtains and groping around in the dark in an attempt to cling to some concept of privacy. They are used to the laid-back and relaxed attitude of the Star of Light which has taught them a different lesson from the book of social etiquette entitled licienciousness and unrestrained sexual relations.
If you are interested in a particular girl and she is not there, ask if she will be back soon. Usually the other girls know what the arrangements are and if a particular lady has gone 'long-time'.
It is not uncommon for girls to accept an invitation to join a visitor on a tour of the islands or for a few days down in Phuket or up in Chiang Mai.
It is not unheard of for visitors to bring a SOL girl or two down to Pattaya, which at first consideration would appear to be bringing coals to Newcastle, but then if you think for a moment about the quality and skill of the Star of Light Girls and their particular expertise, you then understand the reason.
And DR.L. is right in as much as they get about 30 baht for a cola lady drink, but if the customer insists on a whiskey or tequila lady drink, they get no money from it at all.
And he is right about each blow, in which the bar takes the greater cut and the girl is left with the remainder. which is an infinitesmal amount considering what is represents and the fact that she did all the work for it.
Good to see Khun Pl* and Khun J** back from their respective trips.
Would the guy who accidentally walked off with Khun J*y's spectacles after an in-washroom bj a few weeks ago, ( hers looked exactly the same as his own), please either return them to her or to the bar or post them back to her ( the address of the bar is on page 1 of this thread.).
As for competition from other bars in the vicinity of Patpong, the Star of Light has no need to worry, because at the end of the day, for those of you who have the inclination and desire to visit these places, the Star of Light is worlds apart and in a class of its own.
That is the main reason why regulars never bother about other places for a bj and have been known to travel half way around the world year after year to find themselves encirlced by a pair of Star of Light Lips.

As for myself, I'll stick with the Star of Light girls who, although they all have different names, appear to be very peachy and juicy.
I did hear that one or two of the infamous heroines from yesteryear were around this morning, but by the time I had wheelchaired myself over there, they were gone.

Yes, a very pleasant and gentle girl with a lovely personality.
