I haven't been as fortunate myself at the Star of Light in finding a job either outside of Thailand, in Bangkok or even in the bar itself ( although being the cashier / papasan there does appeal ), although I have met some very interesting people there over time.

I have managed in this life wherever I have been, Europe, Australia, South-East Asia, etc to disregard this so-called 'social order' in society, admittedly to my cost at times and have made acquaintances and friends without regard to their social standing or their earnings or the type of their ocupation or where they live.
And through this, I have found life much more rewarding and myself the richer for it.
Why, I could meet you and possibly we could become friends, and yet you are a forum member. That would have nothing to do with us getting to know one another.
When I walk down the road with my cutie from the Star of Light and come across a person from work or my community, I am proud of being with 'my' girl, because I know that she is a terrific person in her own right and that I enjoy her friendship immensely.

I agree with the point you guys just made, and I think it is worthy living that way. Unfortunately, it is diametrically opposed to Thai society and how they view others and themselves. But we are not Thai, and have a bit more freedom and leeway here, and though being of aware of the society we (I) live in, we should not change our essential view.
Yes, if you have a colleague who is educated upper middle class Thai and they meet you with a dark Isaan girl they'll shrug and wonder why on Earth you prefer that low type, you're confused. (In fact even another dark girl from Isaan wonders it!). But generally they accept the fact that the majority of farangs in Thailand are seen with these kinds of girls ("these kinds" being their judgement), and won't be too harshly judgemental. It's a tolerant society. However you can't expect most Thais to step very far out of their conditioning. Even if there really are no consequences, besides a secret or tacit among themselves, opinion.
As one Thai university professor once told my friend, "Would you living in your own country marry a poor black hooker?" Maybe the professor didn't understand all the differences--This professor had been to the US, and was outwardly very accepting, but that's a reflection of the class system here and with most middle class, and upwards, people around the world.
So thanks for your brave comments, guys. People say this thread is long and rambles too much, maybe they're right. But some gems turn up now and then.

Well, actually, I'm tempted to say, And this is my girlfriend ***. Hands off.

seajohn,, funny you mention the "corriculum vitae" as the VERY first questions you will be asked in Vietnam are age/ job/ how much you earn. It is in fact necessary for them to use the correct terminology when speaking to you,,, if you higher they use the word Ong ( for you ) if similiar then Anh if very lower probably use em.

I was just poking around and looked at this thread, which seems to be off subject (Star of Light) but there were some interesting comments; and so here are mine (perhaps not so interesting and still off-subject)
Well at least we all know how the ladies at the Star of Light earn their living and I can tell you that it is a whole lot more honest and straightforward than the Hi-So Thai / Chinese Thai folks who are judging her and perhaps you for being with her.
