Apart from the p4p issue, Penang is not a really bad place to visit once.
It has a distinctive atmosphere and a lot of the original Chinese houses are still in their original state.
Also, a trip to the hill and the various temples (Snake Temple and the like) is worthwhile.
And you can pick up DVD at low prices...
But as I said, only once....

Sorry to say that I was to busy to try anything in Penang. Was there for a dragonboat race and too busy with the team to step out and experience anything worth while to report. Like others have stated though there was not the same vibe as in Bangkok. It was quite sedated on the streets even after the race. All the same it was a good time, but look forward to going to Bangkok sometime soon.
Thanks to all for the suggestions. Maybe next year I will get more time.

Nevermind MasterR, there's always next time, I find Malaysia always drags me back. I enjoy my trips to Penang, an interesting island, lots of history.
For me, the best thing about Malaysia is the food, the top destination for food in Asia, in my opinion (even better than Thailand). The best breakfasts anywhere, roti canai, nasi lemak etc.
Okay, as a whoring destination Malaysia is poor, Thailand and the Philippines are streets ahead, even Indonesia is, but for food, wow!

I have booked to stay at the Paradise Sandy beach hotel, with the family booked a family deluxe suite. Anyone know what this hotel is like and more to the point is there any action around. I was just wondering like LOS are there any legit proper massage shops where one can get a decent massage with or withot extras. Any help is appreciated as I am with family window of oppturnity is small

If you want to have a nice vacation at the beach then avoid the one where you are booked, almost in the middle of nowhere. Change your booking to Golden Sands (Shangri-La Hotel) or Parkroyal. Both are at Ferringhi beach with a lot of activities for kids too.
I have been to Penang several times and stayed mostly at Golden Sands. You have night market, restaurants, food court etc easily accessible. Kind regards.

Roti prata for breakfast.
Penang laksa for lunch. You gotta have this at the right store. Can't remember the famous ones, but a search on the net should prove fuitful.
p4p. Forget it. Bring a Thai mate along and soak in the sights together and to gurantee fruitful nights as well.

You gotto be kidding. Penang IMHO is one of worse places for food. Most places are shit holes that make the road side eateries in BKK look clean.
Thinking I may be missing something, I bought a foreign magazine that on the cover was supposed to have all the best places to eat in Malaysia. Well half of the magazine had places to eat located in Singapore while the rest only had places in KL. Seems like they did not have enough places to recommend from Malaysia to fill up a magazine and none from Penang.
Every Thai food place I ate there was not only more expensive than BKK, but terrible. Better Thai food in LA, but in LA you have real Thai's makingthe food while in Penang they were all Chinese.
I took my TGF there and she thought the food was bad there as well. Bangkok is a food oasis compared to Penang. Things may be better in KL as it is a major business center, but the only reason I go to Penang now a days is to work at some of my customers there.

Luckily we have different tastes. I think we can agree about one thing and that is "Thai pussies are the best in the World". Taste good too. About food, Penang is famous for its food. Singaporeans go to Penang just for the food. Penang hawkers come to Singapore at the York Hotel 4 times a year. I think this means something.
Thai food is some of the best too.
But we can always agree to disagree. Kind regards.

I am with TU in this subject....it's quite difficult to find a positive thing of Penang....food for sure it's not one, not even in the few deluxe hotels available there....
Singaporeans going to Penang for food is one more proof that they don't understand anything about it.....c'mon guys, let's be honest...can we really compare the taste of a Laksa with some of the best Thai noodles???
