I spent the time with a lady I had met on my previous trip. We went to a nightclub, themed on a motorcycle club that looked to me like a Calif. Beer bar. It had a small fortune in Harley’s parked in the front – chained to a hitching post ala a 1950’s western movie. Inside, it was dead – no action!
We then went to an actual nightclub. It was packed and the customers were swilling hard liquor like prohibition would be legalized the next day!
I can’t comment on the action as I was with a group. There were many good looking Chinese ladies there and they all checked me out, except I am checked out non-stop by everybody from 2 to 100. It’s like they have never seen a guilao – blue-eyed foreign devil! It is a very disconcerting experience walking down the street in Nanning and have literally hundreds of people stare at you. It is as much the curiosity factor as anything!
I found the biggest problem with Nanning ladies is they don’t listen to what you are trying to say and drop everything when the cell phone rings – worse than BKK. I discovered in Nanning why Asian ladies like the top position – they can get to the phone faster. If it is in the other room, they just hope off to answer it.
If you happen to speak putonghua – simplified mandarin – with a Beijing accent, they will ignore you.
They last night I was there, my friend told me we were going out for dinner with her family to a nice restaurant. I was concerned about who was going to pay for the dinner, so I asked her to clarify it. It was not a question of the money, just the proper etiquette to follow. I asked her two simple questions:
1. Who was going to pay for the dinner?
fuqian wei zheige wanfan shei ma?
2. How much the dinner was going to cost?
zheige wanfan duoshao qian ma?
After asking her three times, my understanding was that her cousin was going to pay for the dinner and that it was going to cost 300 Yuan per person or a total of 2,400 Yuan - ~ USD $300. That seemed to me rather expensive for a dinner in Nanning, but it was not my concern as I was not expected to pay for it.
When the meal was served, I assumed it was the first course as it resembled an exaggerated appetizer. There were many small foods that you cooked in a large soup pot set in the middle of the table – similar to shabu shabu or Chinese Hot Pot. I reasoned it could not be the entire meal because it would certainly not cost 2,400 Yuan. The food was delicious, but I did not want to eat too much as I would have problems finishing the main course. I looked at the others tables and saw basically the same meal being served and did not see a main courses being served.
It soon became obvious to me that we were eating the entire meal and there would be no more food. I had no problem with that except I thought it was a much overpriced meal - 2,400 Yuan for what I thought was an appetizer course. When the bill was presented, it was given to me. This annoyed me - not because I had to pay it or because it was 2,400 Yuan; but because I asked my friend three times who would pick up the tab and was told I would not have to pay it.
It was another example of Chinese women who love to talk and never listen to what you are saying; only for the break in your voice when you finally have to breathe, so they can cut in!
I started counting out 100 Yuan notes, and when I got to 500, her cousin’s husband looked at me like I was a guilao idiot. I finally realized the entire bill was 300 Yuan, not 300 Yuan per person. I guess they thought I was going to leave a 2,100 Yuan tip.
Probably better than having your willy abandoned in mid-stroke in order to get the phone
I would try the nightclub scene as it looked promising!
I stayed in downtown Nanning at the Yongjiang hotel, which is girl-friendly, and saw lots of potential ladies.

I went to China in 1978. You think you were a curiosity when you went, you should have been there right at the tail end of the Red Guard Revolution.
One day three of us went to the Shanghai Zoo where we were the star attraction of the day. There were groups of several hundred just following us around and one rather large group of school children stopped us and gave us some sort of greeting, directed by their teacher, which none of us understood.
All in all, quite an experience. Several fond memories from this little junket, best shared over a brew.
