Yeah I've got to reemphasize Peter's point. I wasn't in the Rosedale, and I'm sorry off hand I can't remember the name of my hotel... But I also received the persistent and uncanny calls every night after returning to my room... They would call again and again... I had to disconnect my phone!

I was warned this was a frame up, so I didn't try it. I'd recommend avoiding any massage in which your room is being called. Interesting idea, but no==don't do it!

Here’s my long-winded comment on hotels...

I was in China last month, and like previous visits, I have found the hotels to be guest friendly. IMHO, as long as you and your companion have proper attire, the hotel staffs will take no notice of you. If a lady is meeting you at your room, the best is to tell her to avoid talking to the staff and go directly to the elevator.

If arriving to a city, I would reserve a hotel for one or two nights in advance, and then later either extend the stay or change hotel. My preference is to stay at hotels that are operated or associated with the governments because I find that the staffs to be very friendly, particularly when they see that you are a foreigner.

Do not be afraid to ask to see the room in advance. Once, I had paid in advance for the room, and then when I saw the condition of the room, I checked out after 30 minutes and received a full refund. I saw a few foreigners there, and it puzzled me why they are staying at this hotel because it was not cheap and was somewhat far from entertainment or shopping areas.

I would occasionally request to switch room. It puzzles me that at some hotels, a large room with a king or queen size bed is cheaper than a small room with two singles, even though I am booking for two. I guess they are charging by the number of beds.

In my last trip, while in Beijing, I stayed mostly at a new 2-3 star hotel called Beijing City Central International Youth Hostel. Its website is http://www.centralhostel.com. Almost all of the guests were foreigners during my visits. The staffs were not friendly, check-ins and check-outs were annoyingly slow, and the amenities were few. On the positive side, the rates are cheap, there is free high speed Internet in each room, and it is within walking distances to a subway stop, railway station, post office, grocery stores, western restaurants, and oh yes a place offering various massage services. However, I cannot tell you about this massage parlor because I prefer getting massages at hair salons. The hotel also has a meeting center where you can surf the Internet, cook your own food, play pool, and do laundry. Do be careful of the scam artists hanging around this area.

While in Shanghai, I stayed at New Asia Hotel. A few streets away from the hotel, there was one or two street blocks that reminded me of LOS. I must have walked by a dozen massage parlors. Just like LOS, the ladies would try to get my attention. Some of the ladies were quite attractive. Alas, I did not try any of them because one night I was carrying too much cash and because the other nights my companion was with me. She was okay if I have some fun provided that she could have her hair done, but we did not see any decent hair salon. Pity.

If you need help with hotel reservations, I can ask my contacts in China find one for you. I never have to pre-pay or provide my credit card info. Just pay when you check-in.

Cheers.

BN,

Can you tell me if the The New Asia Hotel in Shanghai was girlfriendly? Also what kind of rate did they charge you per night?
