well common sense would say take some smaller notes for smaller things of course
but to exchange when you are there, I guess 50 or 100 but make sure they are the ones accepted, some serial numbers they dont like? or maybe the newest 100s

The bad year US$100 bills are 1996. That's the year the Iranian, or North Korean government, I can't remember which, printed off $10+ billion worth in an attempt at that time to ruin foreign trade, but the counterfeit was so good not much came from it.

The biggest place one runs into high quality counterfeit bills is in the high level drug trade, dealing in quantities larger than US$1million, with a few hundred thousand of counterfeit added at times to increase the profit margins.

Electronic detection methods at central banks can spot them, but it is real hard for others to do it. The micro printing around the portrait is the give-away, but can only be seen with a real good magnifying glass, or 10x loop. The rest was spot on.

Being a government they were able to get the right paper, and they copied the ink exactly. They were so good they were passed on easily in trade outside the country, with them only being spotted when they hit a central bank, being sent by a local bank as worn out currency, or in bank to bank transfers.

Now that date is not accepted anywhere in the far east, and most want newer than 2002 dated bills.

If you ask for some smaller US currency bills when you exchange US$100 bills in Cambodia, they will give them to you if they have them, as they want the big bills instead of the smaller ones, or if they don't have any at the time, ask a tuk tuk driver where you can get smaller US bills, but make sure you know how to detect counterfeits, it isn't that difficult. Just Google the US Secret Service website, and it has a whole section on currency.

The easiest is the two colored ink in the corner denomination numbers, tilt the bill and that number should change color. If it doesn't ask them for a different bill.

Money changers will try to pass off any bill they know is counterfeit first. If they turn it in they loose that much money. There is no reimbursement for turning in counterfeit bills.

In the casino industry, we were constantly being given counterfeit detection training, and had immediate warnings if any counterfeit bills were detected as being passed in high numbers anywhere in the USA, with pictures, and detection methods. Most were so crude you wondered how the place they were passed at could have missed them.

When the first series of new bills came out after the 1996 bad bill detection, 3 weeks after they came out a 16 year old kid with a good laser printer copied them so close, except for the 2 colored ink, that he was easily passing them off. This was after the Secret Service said they couldn't be counterfeited because of the new techniques used. That was what challenged him...lolol.

Hey johnnyk, the time I was there (late 2013), the tuk tuk drivers would ask for $3 but will quickly take $2. I suppose that you could bargain all the way down to $1 if you want. The girl I was with at night insisted that I not pay more than $2.

@johnnyk, I went to Sharky's (pronounced Suckys by the girls) in Nov '13 (11PMish) and it was downright lively, met an amazing girl there as soon as I walked in. Went there again Dec '13 (1AMish) and it was literally empty. So, it's hit or miss...

Spent three days in PP last month before going to Thailand. Very low key. Cheap. Beers in bar $1-1.50 Nice place to spend few days. Not troves of stunners but easy to find some company for the evening. $30 long time. Will surely return.

Long time is $40 now. Has been for a good four years or so. Please be considerate. As the Cambodian economy has grown, the cost of living has risen substantially. Just because they'll take $30 doesn't mean it's right. $40 is still considerably cheaper than the $60+ standard in Thailand.
