Who let the Dog Out, bark, bark, barkbark
Got to BKK last night (27 April) on JAL, arrived at 815pm. The flight was about 60% full, helped my big ole ass having extra room to stretch out.
I was really tired, didn't have a comfirmed reservation so I stopped at a place in the airport and confirmed at the Somerset on Suk soi 15, just past the Manhattan. It's a really nice place but not really GFriendly. The sign says 500Bt per guest. The bellboy asked if I wanted a massage, I decided to take him up on it. Got a much needed shower and right on time a very pretty Thai lady showed up. I got the 2hr oily massage for 800Bt, excellent to say the least. She offered FS but wanted 2K Bt for that, lol, no way. Got a bbbj for 500 Bt which was excellent.
Jet lag sorta jumped on me today, I fel like death warmed over when I got up. Got in a nap and feel pretty good now. Saturday I met up with Dumbo who is a fellow SEA traveler, very nice guy, thanks to him for helping out with my questions.
Flew in to Phonm Penh on Sunday on BKK air. I'm impressed with FKK air, excellent plane, staff and right on time. The flight was pretty calm for all things considered and the in processing at PP airport was swift and painless.
I had sent an email to one of the "Tour Agents"that advertises on a SEA board, he was a no show. Got a regular cab and I'm now at the New York Hotel. I can't say how the hotel compares with others, but I'm satisfied.
Since I'm still jet lagged I laid down jsut after arrival and took a short nap, well missed that one, I snoozed for 4 hours, got up it was dark and late. I looked and could not find my phone number that Acatman had given me so I got on the PCs in the hotel lobby, could not access my SEA board, started to worry that I would have to get a cabbie that I didn't know or trust. I finally located one of our tour guides and he came by just after 9pm. He took me to a nice Khmer resturant along the river, food was excellent and the staff was a gas. The clapped and carried on when I came in, made me wonder why they were so thrilled that I had shown up. Well during the meal I was beset by a bevy of young beauties who assaulted me with kindness and massaged away every upper body ache and pain I had. Problem was I was eating, but what the fudge, I can eat and drool at the same time.
After dinner the first place we hit was DV8. IMHO a hole in the wall, but not a bad hole in the wall. First girl who came over Phan she is too pretty and very sweet. Half a drink later we agreed on her coming to my hotel for $10. Got to the room, she helped me finish unpacking, we were also waiting for the AC to catch up. Good fieldreport, there is just one tiny detail that bothered me. I see it alot with different people in other reports and I never see anyone even noticing it.

Now it is that word TRUST that makes me uneasy. What does that word mean to you????
Does it mean TRUST as in : I trust this mototaxi to drive me to places without me waking up in a ditch with my own dead body??? In that case you are DEAD on. I hope! I can live with that explenation. You get the service you pay for, with a smile.
But if your TRUST means : I trust this mototaxi to drive me to places without him watching over my money from inside his pocket. Then I think you are deluding your self.
There is only one thing that I trust from a mototaxi and that is that he will spend your money for you. I'm about 99% certain that you can get any motodriver for the whole day for half the money you pay your guy. I'm also certain that you pay double in any place you visit. Since he will tell the owner that he wants his commission for bringing you.
So on my first visit it happend I also took a "trusted" mototaxi. He brought me places and now I know a bit about where is what. For my next visit I had only one rule and that was : NO mototaxi at all or when needed just a mototaxi to bring me one-way. When I'm ready, finding one that takes you back, should take less then 5 seconds.
Because a roundtrip in town should cost you only $1,- it is up to you to figure out what you payed too much to keep this guy as your personal driver. And that is not even counting the commision you payed.
If your argument is that you don't mind paying a lot of money (to Cambodian standards, to you it is probably nothing) for some easy comfort then that is your business. But I hope you (and all the others that do the same thing) understand what the word TRUST means in this case.
I had a realy good guy in Siem Reap, that drove me all over the place to see all the sights. And when you have been there you know that means you realy make some miles to get around up there. My guy never took me anyplace that had girls, or restaurants that had expensive food the moment I entered. When I asked him why he did not do that, he told me that he wanted to make an honest buck and wanted to be a tourguide. I hope he succeeded in that. His name is Kim and he works from the guesthouse that the BKK - SR bus dumps you at (anybody here that has the name?). I forgot the name as it is a bit basic for me at $5 per night.
Now the guy I had in PP charged me double for a few rides in town. So he did less then half the work for double the price. And he brought me to my hotel where a room cost me $15 and somehow the next year a better room only cost me $10. How strange???? I wonder where that $5 went.
So if you use TRUST in : "I trust him to f*** me!" then you are on the right track. And keep those reports coming.

If you don't want to sweat your ass off, ask a reputable motodriver to find a friend with an airconditioned car to cart you around in... I HATE sweating my ass off, and always require this service... When trolling around at 2am its a lot safer feeling. When I treck to dingy bars in seedy neighborhoods and whatnot I always feel better walking into the bars with not 1 but 2 Khmers with me (one being former military police).. I pay them between 20 and 40 dollars a day for this peace of mind. I use them every time I go to Cambo which is about 6 times a year. They know me, I know them, we SMS each other when I'm at home in Thailand and such. There is trust here. Any desire I have, they hook it up, no matter how dangerous. Yo! I want some weed! BAM! Yo! I want some Viets from the dingy road we passed yesterday. BAM!
Do what you feel at ease with doing. Me, I don't mind paying for a car with 2 Khmer escorts to ensure my safety and to answer any questions I have.

I live in PP for half the year and I own my own motorcycle. However, I still utilize motodops all the time. I have trusted motos that can shop for me, deliver things around town, grab me a newspaper to read with my breakfast, and much more.
I personally do not like riding with motodops because I do not trust their driving skills and do not like their bullshit. However, I was recently in PP with a friend of mine. It was his first trip to Asia. We had just left the Walkabout and were heading south on 51 towards Sihanouk. An suv blew a stopsign and very nearly killed my friend on the back of a moto. I was following on my motorcycle and saw the suv miss him by a very few inches. I pulled up along side them as they continued down the road. His driver was shaking.
We went on to have a fun night at Martinis. But a few inches or half a second and my buddy would have been killed. He was remarking how great his driver was. In fact, the reason he almost got killed was because the driver did not look before crossing the intersection.
My point is that you put your life in these guys hands. The biggest misconception among tourists is that these guys are really good, safe drivers. Bullshit. The vast majority do not have or use mirrors, do not look or care what is behind them, do not look when pulling into intersections, etc. etc.
I do know some trustworthy, safe motodops. If a friend or a family member shows up and needs a moto, you can bet that it will be someone that I know is a safe driver. I don't pay high prices. They charge the same as every other motodop. They just get tipped a little better.
For a newbie, a moto that speaks good english and does his job well is worth a premium.
